This collection presents five Christina Rosetti poems set by Per Drud Nielsen for unaccompanied SATB choir. Had Christina Rossetti lived 40 years earlier and not written in English but in German, I am convinced that the many Lied-composers in the first half of the 19th century would have gathered around her. And in many ways I have set her poems to music in the spirit of the Lied tradition: I have made use of simple, modified strophic forms. And if you hear a loan from a well-known Schumann-Lied in one of my Rossetti-songs, you are not mistaken. - Per Drud Nielsen.

This six-movement chorale cantata was first performed on 26 December 1724. The text is based on the Lutheran translation of the early Christian hymn A solis ortus cardinem. The outer movements frame two arias for tenor and bass, and two secco recitatives for alto and soprano. The first and sixth movements are in old-fashioned style, with four-part vocal writing and colla parte instruments. In the aria (movement 2) the tenor is accompanied by an obbligato oboe d'amore, and in the 4th and most striking movement, the three string parts accompany the bass. The demands on the singers, instrumentalists, and chorus are typical of a Bach cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3112100.

Homilius is known for having always searched for new forms in order to avoid any schematic pattern. Thus, one looks in vain in the present cantata for arias. The opening choir is introduced by two choral groups: One calls to take up the fight against the devil, while the other fearfully hesitates and finally, in the chorale Jesus Christus, wohn uns bei agrees to join in. Following each of the three stanzas of the embellished chorale, in a recitative the hesitant one is given courage before he also takes up arms, in a confident final chorus. Score available separately - see item CA.3721900.
