He was the tenth and youngest child of a clergyman’s family. He played and improvised on the Piano even before he went to school.

These five part-songs were composed over ten years from 1903 to 1913 but only the first was published in the composer’s lifetime. Bridge’s early works those written before the first World War were more late Romantic in style warmly expansive than his mature works. These songs display Bridge’s skill and craftsmanship.British composer Frank Bridge was active in the early decades of the 20th century and was a highly respected conductor violist and teacher his sole composition student having been Benjamin Britten. Britten honoured his former teacher in his work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge based on a theme from one of Bridge’s pieces for String quartet.

Frank Tichelli is well known for both his choral music and repertoire for instrumental enssembles. Lux Aeterna a new unaccompanied motet for mixed chorus is dedicated to the memory of his grandfather. With a lush harmonic language the lyrical work is true to the meaning of the historic text. The work is appropriate for concert use or in a worship setting with high school college/ University or adult voices.

Contemporary British composer and conductor James Whitbourn an award-winning creator of Choral music film and television scores and works for the concert hall may be best known for his largest composition theoratorio Annalies which sets words from The Diary of Anne Frank. The text in this extract is not Anne Frank’s but is drawn from Psalms and Lamentations. The stately chordal movement lends an appropriately solemn tone to awork that has understated power.
