Par WHITBOURN JAMES. This glorious collection of beautiful choral music by composer James Whitbourn includes fifteen short works drawn from his oeuvre from the first few years of the 21st century. Many of his greatest compositions are included in The Choral Collection, with many of the pieces working perfectly for seasonal performances, while also reflecting the many fruitful collaborations of Whitbourn's distinguished career. All works are arranged for SATB Choir. James Whitbourn has become renowned throughout the world for his acclaimed compositions and settings of numerous texts. He has been described as truly original and an innovator of contemporary British choral music, collaborating with people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The former appears here, as A Prayer Of Desmond Tutu, a setting of one of the Archbishop's prayers. His arrangements and compositions for the King's College Choir have been universally critically acclaimed, with A Great And Mighty Wonder, Nunc Dimittis and Were You There? representing these hugely popular collaborations. Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Eternal Rest and Give Us The Wings Of Faith were both composed specifically for television broadcast, the former (in its orchestral form) was played for the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. His longest work, for which he is most famous, is a setting of text from'the Diary of Anne Frank'. There Is No Speech Or Language comes from this work, taking its text from other sources, but that still maintain the beauty and tragedy of the wider piece. The Choral Collection of fifteen compositions by James Whitbourn is full of beautiful, haunting, uplifting and inspiring melodies for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment from one of the most treasured British choral composers. The brilliant choice of texts throughout is matched only by the sheer compositional skill of Whitbourn in evoking the emotions of the words in the musical form. Also included are suggestions for seasonal song use, a list of recordings, and fascinating song notes written by Whitbourn himself. The joy of choral singing is nowhere more evident than in a work by James Whitbourn, and performances of any piece within this collection is sure to be remembered for a long time to come./ Recueil / Choeur Mixte (SATB) et Orgue

(+)
The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke-Scored for chorus children's choir organ and chamber orchestra St Luke Passion adopts a pared-back focus on choral voices over its 75-minute span. Seeking a more spiritual inward approach to match Luke s text the composer eschews settings of interpolated texts as arias and the customary Evangelist and Christ soli: everything is sung by choral forces. A children's choir grants a measure of innocence to Christ as the sacrificial lamb emphasising aspects of otherness sanctity and mystery. The Passion narrative is framed by a Prelude exploring the Annunciation and a Postlude taking us beyond the Crucifixion to the Resurrection and Ascension. These incorporate Gospel textswhere Luke explains the Kingdom of God.

(+)
This work was commissioned by the Friends of Cathedral Music to mark their Diamond Jubilee in 2016 with the intention of performance by as many of the affiliated choirs as possible. Naturally a celebratory anthem was envisaged but with a text that is general enough to allow its performance throughout the church year. The opening section features a joyful energetic setting of the first five verses of Psalm 105 (King James Version). A contrastingly quiet and gentle passage follows the text being Robert Herrick’s (1591–1674) To Music. A Song ('‘Music thou Queen of Heaven Care-charming spell …'). The openingmaterial then returns with a short ecstatic organ postlude bringing the piece to its conclusion.

(+)
Drop drop slow tears was written for The Arcadian Singers of Oxford University for a recording in 2002. The work is set in a simple three-verse format beginning with upper voices whose melting harmonies are intended to convey dropping tears. The second verse sung by lower voices is more urgent but subsiding to a serene final verse. Here all eight voice parts sing in rich almost claustrophobic harmonies ending on a blurred final chord that fades gently avoiding a firm conclusion. The Novello New Choral Series is an inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers offering pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. This collection is perfect for choirs looking to broaden their repertoire and explore some of the best new music around.James Davy (b.1980) has worked with many choirs in churches and cathedrals around the UK most recently as Assistant Director of Music at Blackburn Cathedral. He is a composer with a real affinity for the voice and has developed a keen ear for effective timbres harmony and word-setting. He has had several works broadcast on radio and television and has written for choirs around the UK and USA. In 2010 he won the Choir & Organ Composition Competition.

(+)
Sing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner's Locus Iste and Mozart's Laudate Dominum . Others are arrangements, adaptations or longer pieces, abridged to bring them into the scope of a useable anthem, including choral arrangements of Handel's Largo , the Ave Marias by Schubert and by Bach and Gounod, and Franck's Panis Angelicus amongst many others. This collection has practicability as a priority. The Organ parts can be played on either the Piano or the Keyboard. Much of the music in Sing, Choirs! will be suitable for special occasions, making this an indispensable volume for choirs singing at weekly church services, weddings, funerals and in the concert hall. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Orgue

Novello New Choral Series-In Out of the south cometh the whirlwind chant-like melodies and colourful organ writing combine to explore the relationship between God and the natural world. Awarded a 2011 King James Bible Composition Award the work uses rich language from the Book of Job to chart a trajectory from doubt toward belief. At the opening lyrical melodies build from a single pitch to proclaim the majesty of the ?wondrous works of God.? There is no rose may be considered as having three distinct but musically interlinked phases. The first is reflective in nature a set of musings on the mysteries of Mary as the Mother of God the nature of God Creation and the Trinity; the music lends a sense of the rising expectation appropriate to the season of Advent. This increasing tension breaks out into the angelic chorus Gloria in excelsis Deo a brief glimpse of something other which is then echoed by the fading repetitions of Gaudeamus (we rejoice). Finally the poem moves on joining the procession towards Christmas; a new key the expanding range and Transeamus (we go/proceed/cross over) fading intothe distance serve to provide a musical metaphor for the journey. The Novello New Choral Series is an inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers offering pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. This collection is perfect for choirs looking to broaden their repertoire and explore some of the best new music around.Andrew Cusworth (b.1984) read music at Magdalene College Cambridge where he was also an Organ Scholar. Recent compositions include Factum est silentium for double choir and organ which won the first New Music for St Paul’s Cathedral Composition Competition and Give ear O ye heavens which was shortlisted for the King James Bible Trust Composition Awards. 'This is a piece whose effect greatly exceeds its simple means and it would be welcome in any serious carol service.' - Jeremy Summerly Choir & Organ
