Par CHARPENTIER MARC-ANTOINE. Marc-Antoine Charpentier fut un des plus féconds et plus remarquables musiciens de la fin du XVIIe siècle. Il a laissé une oeuvre considérable de musique religieuse. Il se distingue par la personnalité qu'il affirme dans les différentes formes de ses compositions. Il a écrit de nombreux psaumes, des motets pour les principales fêtes liturgiques, des leçons de Ténèbres, des Oratorios et Histoires Sacrées. La plus grande partie de ces oeuvres sont encore manuscrites et constituent le précieux fond des MELANGES, conservé à la Bibliothèque Nationale dont est extraite la Messe de Minuit pour Noël, à 4 voix, ftûtes et violons. Blue Moon , written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, has had many treatments over the decades. Mel Tormé made a smooth hit version in the 1940s, Elvis Presley put it on his first album in 1956 and The Marcels had a doo-wop hit with it in 1961, but 'An American Werewolf in London' was the first movie to associate this most romantic of songs with lycanthropy. The 'Petite Messe solennelle? is the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the 'Stabat mater?, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works.The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner.
