The Gibbons Hymnal contains the 17 hymn tunes composed by Orlando Gibbons for George Wither's The Hymnes and Songs of the Church (1623), many of which are still popular today. 'Yankee Doodle' with variations is the most concise way to describe the piece commissioned by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra to commemorate Conneticut's participation in The United States Bicentennial. 'Yankee Doodle' a tune dating back to the Middle Ages in Holland and England (and used by the British as early as 1755 to poke fun at untrained American troops in the French and Indian war) is interwoven with other folk and national melodies to stitch a patchwork or a musical collage. It is a personal view of American history.'To explain my approach to They All Sang Yankee Doodle I must explain my own background because the piece is made up ofmusical memories imprinted from early childhood.My earliest musical memories are a juxtaposition of sounds - hymns and Bach chorales from the church next door where my mother was choir director; early twenties jazz from my oldest brother's dance band; classical piano from my middle brother and my mother's piano studio; and cowboy songs and turn-of-the-century ballads that I have always identified with my father. Concord California where I was born was once part of a land grant from the Mexican government and the Spanish-Mexican influence remained strong even as the town expanded from a sleepy settlement into an American microcosmos with a wide variety of ethnic groups. Over fifty years ago most of us who sang 'Yankee Doodle' in Concord could not trace our ancestry to the founding fathers. Those of us with Anglo-Saxon names were at the end of the Westward push our forefathers having left behind the Eastern cities a few generations before settling for a time mid-continent then restlessly pushing further West. Little is known of my paternal grandfather for instance except that he had come to California from Indiana walking across Nevada desert to become one of the first settlers in Mordoc Indian territory.Of course the native American the Indian was there to greet each new migration and it is his

Thomas Campion?s Never weather-beaten sail is a sprightly text that powerfully evokes the sailor?s plea for God?s calming presence upon the sea?s unrelenting rushing waves. At the opening of this work for unaccompanied mixed voices the jaunty alto/tenor movement in thirds symbolises the curling waves of the undulating sea the mellifluous soprano melody represents the boat?s sails and the bass section?s never-changing ?A? provides the anchor. All four voices then come together in homophony urging God to ?come quickly...and take my soul to rest?. Rather than a simple repetition of thematic material in the manner of a standard hymn the texture alters through the rest ofthe work until the very end where all voices gradually fade away into the distance leaving what seems like a lone voice in the wilderness to cry ?to Thee?. Contrasting to other well-known setting of this text this new work provides a fresh interpretation suitable for intermediate choirs.

Movement I was commissioned with funds from The RVW Trust for the inaugural concert of the Choir of London conducted by Jeremy Summerly in Christ Church, Spitalfields on 18th December, 2004 - the work, premièred as Threnody, was subsequently toured by the Choir to Jerusalem and the West Bank from 19th-26th December, 2004. Movements II and III, commissioned by Portsmouth Grammar School with financial support from the PRS Foundation, were premièred as And There Was a Great Calm in a contiguous version for lower strings and upper voices by the Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir and the London Mozart Players in a concert at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral on 13th November, 2005 conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu. The title of this latter section is taken from Thomas Hardy's poem of the same name, written at the signing of the Armistice on 11th November, 1918 - a couplet from which is set, in a moment of tranquillity, in the final movement. Relatively new to living in New York, I am much more aware of the independent, vibrant cultural plurality that exists today - it's probably the single most dazzling facet of the City and is largely responsible for the infamous 'edginess' that pervades daily life there. With this in mind, I set to work on Threnody (movement I here) in 2004 - I wanted to write something that was relevant to the Israeli/Palestinian issue without losing that City 'edge'. The texts, in English, are excerpted from a variety of sources: William Penn, William Blake, the Psalms of David and Muhammad Rajab Al-Bayoumi, an Egyptian poet of the early twentieth-century. Fast and rhythmically influenced by the music of North Africa in its syncopations, this movement was the first composition that evolved entirely from my New York perspective. From the moment that the commission for And There Was a Great Calm (movements II and amp - III here) was offered, I knew the piece I was about to embark upon would end up being linked with Threnody in some way. I realized that what I had been aiming for in Threnody served as a template for this new piece, originally composed for a Remembrance Sunday concert. Musical works connected with commemoration or memorials are often suitably pensive and slow - I wanted to start with that concept, but to bring in some of the relentless urban rhythms that had been such a large influence on my life in the preceding two years. The result is that that the second movement is quiet and gentle (a moment of recollection), while the final movement is much faster and vibrant, returning to a more openly elated rendering of the start of Triptych (the texts here dealing with transmigration and the future). and nbsp - I gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Bruce Ruben and Judith Clurman, as well as that of my parents, with the collation of the texts. Commissioned by the leading international classical music label, Naxos, these twenty-four arrangements of traditional and original carols tell the Christmas story - from the hope of Advent and the message of the Angels, to the humble birth of the baby in Bethlehem and the coming of the King of kings. This collaboration between Naxos and Faber Music has brought this volume, containing all 24 carols in four narrative sequences, in new arrangements for SATB choir with minimum divisi. There is a good mix of accompanied and a capella (even the latter have optional accompaniments) and there is practical guidance on how the carols may be used by congregations, as well as choirs with varied resources. Tarik O’Regan's The Night's Untruth for SATB chorus Brass ensemble and Organ is a co-commission celebrating the 10th anniversary of JAM (The John Armitage Memorial Trust) and the 40th anniversary of VocalEssence. 'The Night’s Untruth explores the use of sleep as metaphor by dint of excerpts from poems written in the 17th to 20th centuries. Death love fear ecstasy isolation dreaming and rest are all textual “variations” on the “theme” of sleep and can be found in the chosen texts. The work’s title is taken from a line in a poem by Samuel Daniel (1562-1619) and speaks tothe composition’s focus on sleep as a parallel possibly dystopian existence to the one experienced in our waking hours.' - Tarik O’Regan March 2010 Scored for brass quintet organ and SATB choir with (minor) divisi and occasional moderately demanding solos for tenor and soprano this evocative 16-minute work probes the mystery of sleep with texts from poems by Keats Samuel Daniel Shakespeare and Hart Crane: 'death love fear ecstasy isolation dreaming and rest' are the themes O'Regan explores through these texts in a work as episodic as a disturbed night with the title creating a 'focus in sleep as a parallel possibly dystopian existence'. - Organists' Review

There is a wealth of Christmas repertoire for choirs to choose from and sometimes it is difficult to select which arrangement you want of your traditional carols. It is refreshing when you get a selection which has a new version of a familiar carol plus two carols which you think you should know but donâ??t. This is the case with Joanna Gillâ??s three new carols. â??Sir Christèmasâ? a traditional British carol in the setting by William Mathias has been a popular choice for many years. Yet here is a refreshing new arrangement with the hint of sleigh bells and a choral texture where the melody is passed from voice to voice. The carol builds to a triumphant ending to highlight the fun and merry making to be had at Christmas. Then we have two new original carol settings: â??I heard the bells on Christmas dayâ? with words by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It is presented with a swinging bell like texture and a catchy tune builds to a dramatic ending wishing peace on earth goodwill to men. â??Look to the Stableâ? is a new carol with words by Becca Beschizza a gentle lullaby to the new born baby Jesus praising this event and the Glory of God. This gentle melody is bound to become a favourite with both choirs and audiences.The three carols in this album are going to appeal to the singer with their simple but effective word setting along with the beautiful and well-crafted accompaniments. In this fifth volume of Warlock’s Choral works a set of three songs on poetry of Hilaire Belloc have been arranged for Chorus SATB and Piano as well as The Birds a fourth setting of Belloc originally written as a unison song for boys’ Voices. The Rich Cavalcade and The Spring of the Year were written and published in Warlock’s lifetime. Written in his maturity these songs show Warlock’s idiosyncratic Voice influenced by Elizabethan and folk music Delius and the music of his time.Composer writer and musical scholar Peter Warlock (Philip Heseltine) was active in the early decades of the twentieth century when he distinguished himself by his rediscovery and transcriptionof early English music his writing on Delius Gesualdo and other many other musicians and for his Choral works and songs among them the carol Bethlehem Down.
