Paul Mealor's Behold A Tender Babe is a work for Unaccompanied SATB Choir commissioned by the Hauser-Oberschneider family to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Summer Fields School. The work sets extracts from Robert Southwell's 'In Freezing Winter Night' and lasts around 4 minutes. A review in the September 2016 issue of Organist's Review states that the 'music responds sensitively and dramatically to the lines of the lyric it chooses to set rising triumphantly at the words 'with joy approach' before gently falling away as it repeatedly insists 'behold a tender babe'.' No less difficult but also no less rewarding is PaulMealor’s Behold a tender babe written a year earlier. But it is carefully written so that the difficulties are manageable. The two places where sopranos have a top C are the only points where sopranos divide so only the first sopranos ascend there. The music follows the details of the words with drama at ‘do homage to thy King’ and then falling away most beautifully to ‘behold a babe’. - Julian Elloway

Sam Pegg's A Child Of The Snows for SATB choir and Piano accompaniment is a setting of a poem by G. K. Chesterton. Chesterton was known as an avid traveller and was a friend to all he met on his wanderings. In his own house he was famed for his warmth and hospitality. For him the inn was almost a spiritual symbol. 'In all of my settings of his poems I have tried to convey the sense of a yearning journey of life coupled with the joy of finding something thought lost forever: we travel to a place that if we are truthful we never really left. In A Child of the Snows I have tried to suggest the wandering wondering journey to the next staging post 'the Inn at the end of the world'. - Sam Pegg There is heard a hymn when the panes are dim And never before or again When the nights are strong with a darkness long And the dark is alive with rain. Never we know but in sleet and in snow The place where the great fires are That the midst of the earth is a raging mirthAnd the heart of the earth a star. And at night we win to the ancient innWhere the child in the frost is furled We follow the feet where all souls meetAt the inn at the end of the world. The gods lie dead where the leaves lie red For the flame of the sun is flown The gods lie cold where the leaves lie gold And a Child comes forth alone.

Blake Fragments was written for performance in Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York City and calls for the solo voices to be placed in various positions on the concentric rings that rise up from the central rotunda. In subsequent performances this configuration will generally be impossible but the soloist arrangement that was used is included should performers like to respond in some fashion to the original arrangement. The piece may be performed with the four soloists singing within the main chorus though some spacial separation on a single level or additionally using a balcony or backstage might better dupicate the original intentions. To allow fordifferent positions the four solo parts may be sung by more than four choral members (in the premiere there were two different sopranos covering the soprano part.)

Handel originally wrote Israel in Egypt in the late 1730s but this the well-known version was not written until twenty years later when he discarded the old one as out-of-date. The 'new' version is a two-act oratorio where the chorus is far more prominent and serves much greater variety of expressive purposes than one finds almost anywhere else in Handel's output. Notably there is extensive use of the double-chorus. It did not take long for this 1756 version of Israel in Egypt to assume a place alongside the Messiah as one of England's favorite choral treasures. Part I tells of the Israelites' deliverance from their Egyptian captivity at the hands of Moses; thetwelve choruses that describe the miracles leading to the Israelites' freedom are among the most stunning and colorful ever written -- images of hailstones pestilence and even the glorious parting of the Red Sea are achieved without once resorting to the kind of pictorialism that a lesser composer would relish. Part II Moses' Song recounts the Israelites' victory. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score and hence contains a piano reduction of the original orchestral accompaniment. The full score is also available order code DP16788.

In his use of authentic Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. In 1916 hepublished Six Choral Folk Songs of which Hampshire folk tune The Song of the Blacksmith is the fourth.Holst uses the power of his mixed Voice Chorale to set the song among onomatopaeic syllables to evoke the smithy. The song isone verse long which Holst repeats not quite completely three times like the endlessly spinning thoughts of a rejected lover. There are many time signature changes between 4/4 and ¾.Gustav Holst has earned a place amongthe most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.

Teaching his disciples about service and servanthood Christ gently bathed the feet of his followers and bid them to do the same. “A Servant's Song ” from the cantata Colors of Grace moves from the belovedAmerican folk hymn “What Wondrous Love ” into a moving and inspiring retelling of Christ's incredible gesture of love toward the disciples. Beautiful imagery in the text calls all Christians to take the towel andbasin and use them well. Taking up a tattered garment Jesus laid aside His crown. There before His own creation Jesus took a servant's place... What an amazing lesson in grace.

The “eagle's wings” text is one of the most frequently set tomusic and yet this one sounds like it has always been there but not revealed until now. The essence of “wait” is captured in the opening section which gives way to a new tempo building with the “mounting onwings.” The true soaring takes place with a 12/8 meter the voices building in triumph. A final return to the “waiting” theme provides an assurance that has permeated the entire composition. Excellent for churchand school.

Requiem canticorum is a five-movement work of 12 - 14 minutes’ duration. Its title means 'a Requiem of song' or 'a Requiem of canticles' indicating that it is a commemorative piece which sets texts associated with theRequiem mass rather than being a full Requiem. It is scored for choir soprano saxophone and organ a scoring it shares with the 'Son of God Mass' by the same composer. It can be performed as a concert piece or as afree-standing anthem within the context of a commemorative event or liturgy.‘Requiem canticorum’ can also be performed in conjunction with selected movements from the ‘Son of God Mass’ to make a full concert Requiem. Thekey-structure of the two works allows for a seamless intertwining and in concert should be performed in the sequence indicated below. When performed in this way the sequence can be given the title 'Requiem' or 'Requiem Son of GodMass' in a concert programme.Introit (Requiem canticorum)Pie Jesu (Requiem canticorum)Kyrie (Son of God Mass)Alleluia (Requiem canticorum)De profundis (Requiem canticorum)Sanctus and Benedictus (Son ofGod Mass)Pax Domini (Son of God Mass)Agnus Dei (Son of God Mass)Lux Aeterna (Requiem canticorum)Amen (Son of God Mass)Additionally some of the work can be used within a Requiem liturgy the followingmovements having a liturgical place:Introit (Requiem canticorum) until bar 68Kyrie (Son of God Mass)Alleluia (Requiem canticorum)or De profundis (Requiem canticorum)Sanctus and Benedictus (Son of GodMass)Agnus Dei (Son of God Mass)Lux Aeterna (Requiem canticorum) and Amen (Son of God Mass).'There is real depth and sincerity to Whitbourn's writing lending an atmosphere of solemnity and reassuring calm. Music runs through the story of Arion which begins with a singing competition in Sicily. Arion wins the prize and this puts his life in danger: his newfound wealth excites the greed of the sailors who are supposed to be bringing him back to Corinth and they threaten to kill him. They allow Arion to sing one last song and the power of his singing attracts dolphins to the ship. At the end of his song he jumps overboard and one of the dolphins carries him to safety. So Arion’s musical gift gets him into trouble but it is also his salvation. The idea of being rescued by a music-loving dolphin is very appealing. In Robert Graves’account of the myth the dolphin could not bear to be parted from Arion and accompanied him back to court where “it soon succumbed to a life of luxury.” However Herodotus says that after his rescue and return to Corinth Arion failed to return the dolphin to the sea and it died there. Apollo placed the dolphin among the stars and next to it Arion’s lyre in recognition of his musical skill. This is one of the mythical explanations of the origins of the constellations Delphinus and Lyra. It seems natural to sing a story that has singing at its heart. When I was asked by the Nicholas Berwin Charitable Trust to write a choral work for Making Music something that would be within reach of many choirs and involve children this story struck me as ideal: the men of the chorus could be the bloodthirsty sailors and the women could create an atmosphere of mystery for the arrival of the dolphins represented by children’s voices. There would be one solo voice: Arion the marvellous singer. Andrew Fardell the conductor who was advisor to this commission had suggested that I might use the same instrumentation as a popular arrangement of Orff’s Carmina Burana a work that as well as using children’s chorus features a solo countertenor. I thought the magical otherworldly quality of this

Niels W. Gade. Works Iv-9-Works for Mixed ChoirNiels W. Gade. Werks Volume IV/9 Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817?1890) Works Edited by the Foundation for the Publication of the Works of Niels W. Gade Copenhagen Niels W. Gade is one of the leading Danish composers of the nineteenth century. However only about half of his prolific ?uvre has appeared in print. Given this fact and the growing current interest in Gade there is an urgent need for a scholarly-critical Urtext edition of his music to meet the demands of both scholars and performers. This edition will contain all of Gade's completed compositions and separate movements as well as the arrangements he madeof his own works and those of other composers. In general the main text presents the ?definitive? version based on Gade's personal copy of the printed work. However all the remaining sources have also been consulted for purposes of comparison. Every editorial decision is mentioned and justified in the critical report (English). Gade's interest in choral music spanned his entire career. This volume presents more than 40 of his shorter works for mixed chorus both without and with accompaniment (piano organ harmonium or in one case brass ensemble). They occupy a no less prominent place in his oeuvre than his large-scale choral works with orchestra. Written between 1839 and 1885 they were intended for many different areas of application: songs for school chorus stand alongside liturgical music pièces d'occasion chorales and freely composed works for amateur choirs. The best-known are his Five Songs (op. 13) on poems by Emmanuel Geibel and Ludwig Tieck and the motet O du der du die Liebe bist both composed in Leipzig in 1846.

Performances there begin with a ceremonial procession that follows the movement of a boy chorister accompanied by pipe and drum from the High Altar to a large crib placed in the Nave gathering the choirs (singing from different parts of the cathedral) and principal clergy in the course of the procession. The work though not literally for dancing is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit which is true to theorigin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well known so that the singers can sing with the whole of their bodies and not just their voices. It is suitable for liturgical or concert use.
