With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!

The Stabat Mater is the last work composed by Giuseppe Verdi. He completed it in 1897 at the age of 84. One year later it was published with the somewhat earlier Te Deum as part of the Quattro pezzi sacri. Verdi set Mary's meditation in the face of her crucified son, a classic of Medieval Latin poetry, in an operatically expressive style for choir and large orchestra. Verdi's Stabat Mater is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series Choir & organ. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2729400.

With its traditional forms and proven compositional models, its original ideas, which are sometimes marked by a folk- or folksong-like melodic character, and with its harmonic richness, Dvorak's D major Mass serves in its liturgical context to express the worship of God. The Mass is characterized by lyrical meditation rather than by dramatic immediacy. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065300.

Goethe's dramatic ballad The First Walpurgis Night inspired Mendelssohn to write a magnificent and vivid portrayal of the conflict between an old heathen community and the new aspirations of Christianization, between belief and superstition on both sides. In 1833 Mendelssohn had his ballad premiered, but he decided to make far-reaching revisions before he finally had the work published in 1844. The Carus edition by the leading Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd is based on the first printed edition of the score and thus the last authentic version of the work. This important choral work by Mendelssohn is now available in a modern Urtext edition, with full score (in two languages), vocal score, choral score and orchestral material available on sale, as well as a CD recording by the Kammerchor Stuttgart conducted by Frieder Bernius (planned for autumn 2019). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4013800.

During his most productive period as an opera composer, Camille Saint-Saens also wrote sacred works, among which his Oratorio de Noel has enjoyed great worldwide popularity. The colorful and opulently orchestrated Messe de Requiem was composed in 1878 in Bern. The composer dedicated it to his patron, Albert Libon. We have published this edition both with its larger orchestral forces and to enable perfomances of the Requiem in slightly reduced scoring (without losing the special characteristics of the work), in a version with a smaller orchestra consisting of 11 winds, two harps, organ and string instruments. The full score reproduces the Urtext of the Requiem with its original scoring, whereas the performance material is presented and conceived so to enable it to be performed either in the original orchestration or the version with reduced forces. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2731700.

A special charm of the mass is the fact that it dispenses with soloists. In this mass, exemplary for Cherubini's church music is the richness of color in the treatment of the orchestra, as well as in the choral parts, and the expressiveness of the dynamic nuances. With the Schicksalslied Brahms created a very personal interpretation on the theme of fate in a timeless piece of music that will not fail to impress in concert hall or church. The new edition is a modern Urtext edition of the score based on current editorial principles. It is based not only on the composer's personal copy of the first edition as the primary source, but also on the engraving manuscript which was long thought to have been lost. Thus the composer's handwritten corrections made in this manuscript could be incorporated in the new edition, as well as a revision in this bilingual edition of the English translation of Friedrich Holderlin's dramatic poem. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1039900.

Jan Dismas Zelenka's Missa Sancti Josephi occupies a key position among his circa twenty large masses. In this mass, probably composed in 1732 for a feast of a Saint (thus, without a Credo), for the first time the composer took up the operatic style of Johann Adolf Hasse - the latter had first performed his opera Cleofide in Dresden in 1731. Zelenka's unmistakable individuality created a completely independent work with great technical demands which in many details presages the important masses among his late works. The sole source for the first edition of this mass, published here for the first time, is a considerably damaged autograph score which. It is preserved in the Sachsische Landes- und Universitatsbibliothek Dresden. For the Carus edition the experienced Zelenka scholar Wolfgang Horn has expertly reconstructed the missing passages. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2708200.

During Mendelssohns years of study with Zelter, the arrangement of chorales already played an important role, and he continued to be occupied with the protestant chorale throughout his symphonic and oratorical work. The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists.
