This spritely carol is a treat to sing and hear. David Halls has set this 14th century text in highly rhythmic fashion. The bright, syncopated organ part sets the scene for the joy at the birth of Jesus. The text mixes both Latin and English:On the birthday of the Lord, angel choirs with one accord sing in dulci jubilo, Gloria uni Deo! The mixed meter and sudden harmony changes will be a gratifying challenge for choirs. The lyrical third verse provides an effective contrast to the rest of the carol. This piece will delight choir and congregation alike.

David Halls' On the Birthday of the Lord lies somewhere between an anthem and an expanded carol setting, but it is much more accessible music. Its rhythmic vitality, easily singable lines, and verve will serve many situations with joy. I cannot think of a better offertory for Christmas day. - Rev. John L. The Editor
Gerd-Peter Munden is one of the most creative German church-musicians today. From 1992 to 1999 he worked as the cantor in Minden, where he also directed the music school for choristers. From 1999 he has been the Cathedral-Cantor at the Braunschweig Cathedral and the director of the cathedral school for choristers. He is the initiator and artistic director of a successful school project throughout Germany encouraging youngsters to sing.

Singers and audiences will be delighted to discover the work of little-known soldier-poet Lieutenant Joseph Courtney RAMC, whose verse drew from the composer a 14-minute setting in which Elgarian melancholy and passionate denunciation are transformed into a message of hope. Stearn's setting of this famous Charles Wesley text employs flowing diatonic lines that begin in the organ and carry into the choir. The style remains throughout, but there is a section without the organ. Some divisi is used and the altos mus sing a low F. Gregorian chant is the inspiration for Randall Giles' setting of the Evening Canticles. Written in 'alternatim' fashion for cantor and SATB choir, much of the text is recited in the chant style. The harmonic language, at once sweet and poignant, serves well in highlighting the awe and mystery experienced by the Blessed Mother and St. Simeon.
