The cantata Ich habe meine Zuversicht BWV 188 comes from the so-called Picander cycle and was written for the 21st Sunday after Trinity in 1728 or 1729. There are some particular problems associated with its transmission. The original set of parts was lost, and the manuscript score only survives in fragmentary form. Probably as early as the 18th century the score was divided up into numerous separate parts in order to make more money, or to be able to provide as many Bach relics as possible for posterity. The first movement, an instrumental sinfonia, is missing apart from the final bars. We simply know that this sinfonia is based on the 3rd movement of the Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1052 in D minor and that instead of the harpsichord, an obbligato organ was envisaged. Its successful reconstruction by the baroque specialist and organist Pieter Dirksen now makes it possible to perform the cantata again complete with the introductory sinfonia. This setting of Fleur jetée is often called Fauré’s Erlkönig. The hammering ferocity of the piano accompaniment and the drama of the song in fact recall Schubert’s musical setting of Goethe’s ballad Erlkönig. However, in Armand Silvestre’s Fleur jetée, it is lost love to which it is dedicated. This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist.

Mozart's Missa in C K. 317, erroneously dubbed the Coronation Mass, is among the most popular and most often performed works in this genre. The autograph of the Mass, which in many respects is very enlightening, was regarded as having been lost following the end of World War II, but was discovered at the end of the 1970s, it is preserved among the musical treasures contained in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Krakow. Ulrich Leisinger, the editor, prepared the edition based upon what is, without a doubt, the only authentic source, although additionally in the Critical Report he has also consulted an early copy of the Mass (by Fugerl), since such later copies often help to clarify questions concerning historical performance practice. With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. The following is a remembrance by the composer: Under the picture in my high school yearbook it said, Silence is golden. Lost my diploma on the way home from graduation but I knew what I wanted to be: A Big Band Pianist. Started hanging out in Manhattan on Fifty Second Street. There were seven jazz clubs in one block, between Sixth and Seventh. Couldnt drink at seventeen, so just nursed cokes at a dollar each. My salary was twenty a week. Sat by the great Art Tatum, the incredible blind pianist. My teacher accompanied Billie at the Onyx. Later, Dizzy and Bird appeared on the scene. This wonderful year passed, and I swapped my piano for a rifle. The Marines had plans for me. Where would I find a piano? Would I still be able to play? But, find them I did: in the States and even on some Pacific Islands. Sometimes you could even recognize what you were playing. Sometimes, had to kick someone off the bench. I told Kim Rich, the poet, my stories and somehow she made these wonderful lyrics with just a few phone conversations. Hey! Im immortal!!!
