Composed in 1981, this work is a setting of a sequence from the Mass for the Feast of St Thomas, found in the missal of the Hereford use. The text is a conventional hymn of praise but it is distinguished by a lively and attractive rhythm, and as this rhythm would have been lost in translation, I have set it in the original Latin. The work is in the form of theme and variations and is characterised by a gradual crescendo throughout. It begins very quietly with solo timpani and then the choir sing the theme in unison, unaccompanied by flutes, bells, timpani and lower strings.

“O Sing the Glories” is an original work by Alice Parker, who is known primarily for her masterful arrangements. A festive, unaccompanied hymn-anthem that begins each stanza with an ascending scale incorporating a phrygianesque raised fourth. The seven brief stanzas are SATB, TB, SA, SATB, SAT, a quieter SATBB (with layered entrances from the lower voices upward), and a resounding final stanza with the tune in the tenor, while all other voices freely decorate around the melody.

The Bach contemporary Christian August Jacobi is among those composers who made a lasting impression among 18th century Middle German composers, since the influence of the Thomaskantor himself was limited primarily to Leipzig. Jacobi's cantatas are richly varied and they not too difficult to perform. Five of the six movements of the Christmas cantata Also hat Gott die Welt geliebet for soli, choir, strings and basso continuo are based on Luther's Christmas chorale Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her, which give the work a traditional character (the text of the first movement is based on the Gospel of St. John). The richly varied instrumentation and alternation between choral movements and duets by the soloists bring to the sound of the cantata a variety which will also be enhanced by the use of the harp (ad libitum).
