Along with this childishness Hans Christian Andersen's poetry encompasses enormous - almost Willim Blake-ish - cosmic visions, in theinterpolations between e.g. reaching the Heaven as opposed to you'll find it in a Rosebud, or the juxtaposition of Everyday Life and Eternal Poetry - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words, which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace - if you will. Per Norgard.

Commissioned by the New York Virtuoso Singers and its conductor Harold Rosenbaum for the Singers' 25th Anniversary. “Why Was Cupid a Boy?” is a short William Blake poem untied to one of the larger works, though it reprises a common theme in Blake: the bewilderment of Man faced with Love contrasted with Woman's relative comfort in it.

This work for chorus and chamber orchestra was premiered to acclaim by the Oakwood University Aeolians at the 2019 National ACDA conference. Composer Ken Burton has combined new material with spirituals and text by important historical figures to create a piece that follows the experience of black Americans during and after the Civil Rights period. Includes texts by Martin Luther King, Jr., Paul Laurence Dunbar, Thomas Day, John Bicknell, and William Blake.
