The poetry on which this composition is based is the Ballad of External Life (the Ballade des äußeren Lebens) from the pen of Viennese author Hugo von Hofmansthal (1874-1929). He is known for, amongst other things, his libretti for the works of Richard Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra) and as founder of the Salzburg Festival. Von Hofmansthal was one of the last of the German Symbolists. Central to this literary movement was the unification of the internal and external worlds. The search for meaning was a cornerstone of this fin-de-siècle movement. In the Ballade des äußeren Lebens (Ballad of External Life), the meaninglessness ofexistence is expressed in restricting, oppressive metaphors—an ambience that is reflected in the music. Ultimately, man is capable of establishing order from seeming chaos. The poet expresses this powerfully in a non-rhyming line of poetry: ‘And yet, he who says “evening” says much, A word, from which profundity and sorrow flow’.This composition follows the overall structure of the ballad, which is written in terza rima—interlocking three-line rhymes. The choral work can be performed by a chamber choir, but also by a much larger ensemble. The parts are mainly in four voices (SATB), although there are also six parts (SAATBB). One chord is arranged for eight voices. The composer conducted this work at its première, to open the 2013 International Choir Biennial in Aachen. The choir was comprised of four chamber choirs: Aachen Youth Choir, Carmina Mundi, Aachen Chamber Choir and Aachen Madrigal Choir.

A Lyke-Wake Dirge - A Border Ballad Op. 110 a - a choral classic by Vagn Holmboe for SATB Choir A Cappella. 'The Lyke Wake Dirge is a moral ballad from the border telling the story of what will happen to the soul after death. If he has never given shoes and stockings to the poor, then the 'whinnes' will torment him and pierce him to the bone. If he has never given food and drink to the poor, then the fire of purgatory will burn him to the bare bone. However, if he has done all these good works, then Christ shall receive his soul.'.

An old English ballad, Scarborough Fair relates the tale of a jilted maiden who instructs her listener to tell her former lover that she will have him back after he performs a series of impossible tasks: making a shirt without a seam, washing it .An old English ballad, Scarborough Fair relates the tale of a jilted maiden who instructs her listener to tell her former lover that she will have him back after he performs a series of impossible tasks: making a shirt without a seam, washing it in a dry well, to name a few. A modern equivalent might be when pigs fly. Keep it light and bring out the differing accents in the meters, especially the dotted quarter notes. While there is no percussion part written in the score, we had a djembe player play along to bring out the various accents. Feel free to add your own as well. Goethe's dramatic ballad The First Walpurgis Night inspired Mendelssohn to write a magnificent and vivid portrayal of the conflict between an old heathen community and the new aspirations of Christianization, between belief and superstition on both sides. In 1833 Mendelssohn had his ballad premiered, but he decided to make far-reaching revisions before he finally had the work published in 1844. The Carus edition by the leading Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd is based on the first printed edition of the score and thus the last authentic version of the work. This important choral work by Mendelssohn is now available in a modern Urtext edition, with full score (in two languages), vocal score, choral score and orchestral material available on sale, as well as a CD recording by the Kammerchor Stuttgart conducted by Frieder Bernius (planned for autumn 2019). Score available separately - see item CA.4013800.
