Anthony Caesar finds a moving text by the teenage Etonian, Oxford Movement influenced, Digby Mackworth Dolben (1848-1867), who died tragically young while swimming. Canon Caesar's anthem is a classic example of the Franciscan principle (observed by lamentably few composers) of true beauty springing from simplicity. The text inspires a sort of post-Howells harmonic idiom, though with the choir's part kept remarkably simple. The most inspired moment comes when the opening progression, which sets the poignant tension of the first three verses, is subtly transformed into radiant certainty in the last verse: I asked for Thee- / And Thou didst come / To take me home / Within Thy Heart to be. Although the parts divide at times, this miniature classic is not too difficult for any well rehearsed four-part choir.

John Tavener's Ode Of Saint Andrew Of Crete for SSSATBB. This work was comissioned by the Southern Arts Festival with funds provided by the Southern Arts Council. Composers Note: Saint Andrew of Crete was born in Damascus c. 650, and died in the early 8th century. In the Orthodox Church, his Great Canon is appointed to be read in its entirety at the Thursday Morning Service in the fifth week of Great Lent. In this work I have set the first Ode of Saint Andrew's great poem, with interpolations of the refrain Have mercy upon me, O God, have mercy upon me in English, Greek and Church Slavonic. - J.T.

This is a rowdy and lusty setting of a favourite song from the Coventry Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The music has tremendous swing to its stride, and a folksong quality to which, by the use of judicious pauses, the composer adds the feel of impromptu singing. A certain exaggeration might even be called for in performance, for example in the robustly canonic second verse, with no loss of humour or atmosphere. The music draws too on the cumulative energy of unison and octave unaccompanied singing and, apart from a brief episode suggestive of the shepherds' pipes, that is how it proceeds to its rousing conclusion.

This bright, up-tempo spiritual rejoices in what awaits us in heaven (beautiful robes, new shoes, golden harps) and also pokes humorously at those who just may not be allowed through the pearly gates – “everybody talkin' 'bout heaven ain't goin' there.” Vibrant, syncopated rhythms and the lively melody provide ample opportunities for an interesting and expressive concert showcase!

For parish choirs Edmund Jolliffe offers a fine post-communion anthem in a much-loved idiom of Anglican liturgical music. The resources are straightforward: SATB choir without divisions, and piano. The effects however are subtle. The music builds steadily through broadly phrased paragraphs that balance individual lines within the choral ensemble, in a landscape of gently shifting yet unexpected harmonic effects. Immediately appealing, this music will reach out to a range of listeners, both regular worshippers and those for whom occasional church attendance is an opportunity for quiet reflection in words and music.
