It was later popularised inSongs of the Slave a suite of works from the same opera. The text is adapted from a traditional hymn said to be Brown’s favourite with a new tune composed in the early American folk style. KirkeMechem (b. 1925) is an American composer who has found worldwide popularity with his collection of over 250 compositions in almost every form. Songs Of Sanctuary is an extended choral-type work based on the European classical tradition but where the vocal sound is more akin to 'ethnic' or 'world' music. The idea was to have some thematic unity within the work as a whole rather than a collection of disparate pieces in song form. He became interested in Norwegian folksong and began to employ it as a source of musical material and inspiration in his compositions. He was soon established as a major composer. Despite his success Grieg was of a retiring disposition and spentmost of his time at his house in Troldhaugen near Bergen avoiding visitors and shunning public acclaim.

Kyrie in the original version was part of Fjellheim?s album called Biejjien vuelie - Solkvad. ?Biejjien vuelie? menas ?Yoik of the sun? in South Sámi language. 'Solkvad' (or 'Sólarjólb' in the original Norse language) is a poem included in the old Norse poem collection Den eldre Edda. The music on the album was inspired by both the Norse poems and the Sámi yoik tradition.The Sámi culture is mentioned on several places in the old Sagas and indicates that the society in the Nordic countries around year 1000 was indeed multi-cultural. The poems selected from the Norse literature had a certain sacred atmosphere; that is why they were combined with elements from theLatin Mass for the album.One fine example for this combination is Kyrie. The words ?Kyrie eleison? are used both in Latin and South Sámi language with the Sámi version having another rhythm and differently stressed syllables.

Based on a cantillation melody collected by the composer's father in the 1920s this short work suggests ancient origins. The tonality reflects very little of the modes we often associate with oriental or Middle Eastern music. Themelismas are restrained and discreet and the prevailing atmosphere of the music is quietly loving pure and exalted.
