Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream incidental music to the play by Shakespeare is best known for the famous Wedding March though the work contains an array of beautiful music. The instrumental movements are frequently performed as an Orchestral suite or as stand-alone pieces.The Overture was composed when Mendelssohn was just seventeen years old written as a concert overture. Then when King Frederick William IV of Prussia commissioned the adult Mendelssohn to create incidental music for the whole of the play in 1842 Mendelssohn incorporated the Overture and its themes repeatedly throughout the work. Il Est Bel Et Bon (SSAA) English/French-Renaissance French composer Pierre Passereau was a popular creator of chanson rustiques in Paris and at court the early 1500’s. The songs that survive are almost all of a hearty style with plenty of onomatopoeia double entendres puns and occasional indelicacies employing graceful melody polyphony and sometimes chordal passages.Il es bel et bon has retained popularity almost since it was written. There is evidence that this song was sung as far away as Venice in the 1500's. Here composer Helen Cockburn makes the most of the delightful clucking cuckooing passages and the English words have retained most of the original’s consonants to good effect.

Hugo Cole (1917-1995) was a British composer cellist and music critic. He studied under Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He is best remembered for writing several operas and choral works as well as much chamber music but he also wrote a series of pedagogical Cello books and had a successful career as a music critic for The Guardian and Country Life. Cole’s Magnificat was set in the key of G major and first published in 1957. It is scored for Female or Boys’ Choir (SSAA) with Piano accompaniment.
