The words of Peaceful was the Night are taken from John Milton's ode On the Morning of Christ's Nativity, written in 1629. Milton describes the universe halting in utter stillness at the moment of Christ's appearing on the earth. (As the poet wrote: 'His reign of peace upon the Earth began.') In James McCarthy's carol, the voices play a dual role, as narrator, and by evoking the atmosphere of a singular moment of frozen time. Although commissioned by Sonoro for performance during the Christmas period, this singable, lyrical setting would fit well into a programme of music suitable for any time of the year.

Matsushita's composition draws on elements of the Gregorian antiphon. It begins in unison Gregorian chant, as was typical of Renaissance motets, and the beginning of new lines of text are also derived from Gregorian material. Matsushita juxtaposes a syllabic, rhythmic declamation with this melody, constantly alternating bars with even and odd numbers of beats, the octave C' - C'' constantly repeated by the outer parts and leading towards the climax at the text nomen Jesu. After ascending D major arpeggios, the central word Jesu radiates into F sharp major, the following repetition in the compass of an octave on C is more tranquil, ending peacefully with an F major chord, ppp.

O, when I was in love with you, begins the cheeky A.E. Housman poem about love that’s left behind—on purpose. Open fifth drones on la la la recall the sturdy peasant sound of a hurdy-gurdy, while the larky melody in 6/8 time is a modern tribute to medieval dance tunes. â??Wide Worldâ? was commissioned by Sing Up and The Sage Gateshead for â??VoiceOver: Through Time and Spaceâ??. The music has a breathless excitement which matches the text, which centers around what the future holds and the idea that one can be whatever one decides to be. Younger singers could use this as a graduation piece, but it is suitable for many circumstances and ages. While technically SSAA, much of it is in two parts, with occasional divisi on each staff.
