“Ungewisses Licht†is an a cappella choral work by Manfred Trojahn. In it, the composer incorporates text fragments from a poem by Joseph Christian von Zedlitz once set to music by Robert Schumann. The piece lets us hear finely fanned out, rubbing surfaces, gently brought to an inner swaying by changing seconds - this is how the Esslinger Zeitung describes the sound character of the piece.

Remy Franck, www.pizzicato.lu, 5 starsIf I had to choose a 'glass-half-full' contemporary composer, then Roxanna Panufnik would be near the top of my list. Her Music exudes openness and inclusivity, and it is in the choral settings where hope and positivity - two words that lie at the heart of her work - are most keenly felt. ... much of her recent work can be seen to be built on the solid foundations laid down on this impressively varied and diverse collection. 1st perf: EXAUDI, James Weeks (cond), Aldeburgh Festival, Orford Church, 20 June 2010 Written for the outstanding vocal group Exaudi, E Vesuvio Monte is a graphic musical scena that describes the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD in the famous eyewitness account of Pliny the Younger. Eight solo voices project fragments of a Latin text in a dramatic montage evoking Roman fortitude in the face of terrifying disaster. With its strongly projected moods of violence and stillness, Morgan Hayes's music is an ideal medium for this subject, and E Vesuvio Monte was enthusiastically received at its world premiere at the 2010 Aldeburgh Festival.

Gaetano Lorandi's eight-part 'Ave verum' for mixed a cappella choir was awarded a prize by the jury of the International Federation of Choral Music in 2013 for its high repertoire value and its great elaborateness. Based on the Latin prayer 'Ave verum' from the 14th century, this sacred a cappella choral work captures the special atmosphere of the mystery of the Eucharist in a musically impressive way. Characterized by dense chromaticism and successive changes of time and dynamics, it is based on a sophisticated handling of the text and a subtle musical language. Thus, the work is a demanding addition to existing Ave verum settings, both with regard to the music and to the performance practice.

This setting of Christina Rossetti's poem “Then Shall Ye Shout†for unaccompanied double choir was commissioned by Help Musicians UK for its annual St Cecilia's Festival service and first performed by the Choirs of St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and Westminster Cathedral on 17 November 2021. Rossetti's text describes singers biding their time and staying silent until the moment they are able to come together again and sing, loudly and with passion. The piece commemorates the period in 2020 during which musicians were unable to perform due to lockdowns caused by the global pandemic.

About 40 compositions, including half for accompanying and unaccompanied choir, are currently in the catalog of young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born 1992). After several national composition competitions, she won the 13th International Composition Competition Musica Sacra Nova with her Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed choir a cappella. The complex spiritual a cappella choir is based on the Gregorian chant of the same name (Psalm 89,2). Three principal structures are characteristic of this Latin-language choral piece: on the one hand, aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales, soundally supported by long-held organum-like notes taken from the Gregorian choral melody; As well as a renaissance-like polyphony, which is linked with modern harmony; And finally long static chords that blend into harmony and space. A wonderfully mystical-spherical composition, which also gives the individual performer the possibility of individual design through the ad libitum passages marked in the sheet music.
