Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri and traveled to Chicago as a young woman, where she grew acquainted with Harriet Monroe and the literary circle around Poetry. Teasdale wrote seven books of poetry in her lifetime and received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives of beauty, love, life, and death. Jacob Narverud (b. 1986) is an American composer, arranger, and conductor. A native Kansan, Jacob is the Founder/Artistic Director of the Tallgrass Chamber Choir, a professional ensemble of musicians from across the Great Plains. Dr. Narverud is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences as well as an active guest conductor/clinician for choral festivals and all-state choirs across the United States. The poem Der Mond ist aufgegangen by Matthias Claudius is equally well known and loved. In the setting by Manfred Langer sound is joined by the visual element. The moon risen - dimmed hall lights and candles. Than follows richly harmonious and atmospheric choral music. And when the moon has gone down - darkness, silence. One can scarcely imagine a more fitting conclusion to a concert.

About 40 compositions, including half for accompanying and unaccompanied choir, are currently in the catalog of young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born 1992). After several national composition competitions, she won the 13th International Composition Competition Musica Sacra Nova with her Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed choir a cappella. The complex spiritual a cappella choir is based on the Gregorian chant of the same name (Psalm 89,2). Three principal structures are characteristic of this Latin-language choral piece: on the one hand, aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales, soundally supported by long-held organum-like notes taken from the Gregorian choral melody; As well as a renaissance-like polyphony, which is linked with modern harmony; And finally long static chords that blend into harmony and space. A wonderfully mystical-spherical composition, which also gives the individual performer the possibility of individual design through the ad libitum passages marked in the sheet music.

Either of these pieces would be a great introduction to a slightly chromatic style of choral writing—enough of a challenge to be interesting, but not so difficult as to leave the choir disillusioned! Outside of a couple places, the range for all voices is well within a comfortable span.

Commissioned by Soli Deo Gloria, this 9-minute setting of Psalm 104 is described by the composer as “overflowing with the glories of creation, earth, and the heavens.” Glorious Majesty is a work of contrasts, with sections performed by both large and small groups of singers, as well as shifting moods and harmonies, “to highlight the distinction between passages in the text that praise God and those that praise God's creation.&rdquo.

Based on the well-known bible text “Sing unto the Lord a new song†(Psalm 96:1-3), this upbeat composition with strong dynamics and flowing block chords alternating with fast-paced polyphony brings across this joyful message and enthuses singers.Originally conceived for male choir, women’s voices have now been added so that this version for mixed choir presents a further dimension of colour. This version also makes it possible to divide the choir into two groups, one for women and another for men, and to have them sing either together or as separate units. The version for mixed choir was premiered in Uppsala Cathedral (Sweden) on 26 October 2013, with the Uppsala Cathedral Singers conducted by Ulric Andersson.“My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings‘ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard’.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.â€MÃ¥rten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of “Carmenâ€, one of the most prominent womens’ vocal ensembles in Sweden. He currently teaches choral conducting and music theory as well as giving vocal tuition at the Bolandgymnasiet and Musikskolan in his home town of Uppsala. Please find a recording of Cantate Domino performed by the Riga Recording Studio Singers (Latvia) by clicking on Multimedia.

The a cappella motet Alleluja (2018) is a song of longing which resonates existential need as well as the hope of a profound connection to God. In the beginning, which is delicate and motivically very concentrated but metrically deliberately uncoordinated, more and more voices gather to sing together, until suddenly, starting from the bass, a violent and rhythmically exalted incantation breaks out. The following fortissimo unison in a high register is the climax of the entire work piece. In the Abgesang, the beginning is taken up, but now in a polyphonic and harmonically intensified setting. The end in A major seems like a salvation. The work has been released on the CD Rejoice. Vocal Music by Kay Johannsen (Carus 83.496/00).

This new edition of “Exsultate lusti in Domino” was prepared from Denkmaler der Tonkunst in Osterreich. An excellent example of eighteenth-centuray choral writing, this work is a wonderful teaching tool as well as an impressive performance piece. The double choir effect of women and men creates a rich texture, which routinely alternates between major and minor modes. The result is a complex sounding, yet only moderately difficult work, accessible to high school, college, and church choirs.

Henschel's There were Shepherds is a gorgeously intimate setting of the well-known text of Luke 2: 8-14 and would equally be at home in a carol service or Christmas concert.
