For SATB and piano or organ or orchestra This sprightly setting of a sixteenth-century English text tells the tale of a jolly shepherd named Wat. With an upbeat triple metre and a joyful swing feel, this carol has imaginative, contrasting textures, a memorable refrain, and a rousing finish.

Orlando composer Bob Schaefer always brings out the best in choirs with his musically compelling liturgical works. The images he portrays in each unique composition serve to support the particular liturgical day or ritual action. In this eucharistic anthem he makes use of staggered vocal entrances, creating a wash of sound as the melody first emerges from the lower voices.

A lilting choral accompaniment evokes pizzicato sounds surrounding the tenor melody in verse one. The other verses are set more conventionally but still reflect the goals of our Christmas with The Singers series: that the audience will enjoy the famliarity of the carol but be enchanted by the creativity of the arrangement. Challenging, but masterful in how Matthew Culloton treats the ensemble as a self-sufficient choral idiom. Duration 2:30.

This is a short, skilful song setting, a typical English Christmas carol with an Advent text: the cold winter as symbol of the frozen world, waiting for Christ. The setting, through-composed in verses, in five-four time, captivates through its sparse use of diatonic formations of dissonances, cantabile imitations and wide-arching melodic lines. This little gem encourages a beautiful, expressive legato interpretation and makes an excellent counterpart to Deilig (Carus 9.664) in an Advent concert program.

A peaceful carol telling the Christmas story of the angels' visit to the shepherds. The simple but still jazz-inspired harmonies, unison sections and attractive melodies make this a very approachable but effective carol.
