Music for Clarinet in Bb, Cello and Piano. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.' In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls. In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power. Alexander Zemlinsky is mainly known for his operas and orchestral songs with their opulent late Romantic orchestration. His earlier, inspired hit, the Trio for Clarinet op. 3, written in 1896, owes a great deal to his first important role model Johannes Brahms as far as inflection and instrumentation are concerned. And it was none other than Brahms himself who enthusiastically recommended the trio to his publisher Simrock, following the first performance in Vienna. As the autograph has disappeared, our edition follows the musical text in the first edition. It underwent careful examination and was cleared of numerous, partly blatant engraver's errors. Alongside the piano score, our edition comprises a part for clarinet in Bb/A, an authentic alternative part for violin as well as a cello part. / Trio De Pianos

Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, composed in 1891, was inspired by the exceptional musicality of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. As he did for his horn trio, Brahms prepared a viola part as a possible alternative to the clarinet. Both scorings were rehearsed (the viola part being played by Joseph Joachim) prior to the premiere and publication of the work. Bärenreiter’s scholarly-critical edition, prepared by Christopher Hogwood, offers a foreword on the trio’s compositional process with comments on performance practice, as well as a comprehensive critical commentary and facsimile excerpts of the manuscript.
