Dedicated to Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet, New York PhilharmonicClarinet Duration: 5'30 Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing PROGRAM NOTE: The year 2020 has definitely been a very challenging year with many upheavals. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

The composer states: “Acequia Madre demonstrates an approach which was somewhat new to the style of my musical expression at the time of its composition [2012]: structuring a work with the focus on its melodic aspects. I drew inspiration from other creative artists through one of my 'rituals': I surrounded myself with the scores of composers who, for one reason or another, were on my mind at the time, like Iannis Xenakis, Alban Berg's 'Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano,' and 'Contrasts for violin, clarinet and piano' by Bela Bartok, plus Schubert's haunting final 'String Quartet No. 15.' Conquering technical difficulties is something I find particularly rewarding when playing acoustic instruments: fully aware that today's electronics can triumph over a composer's most demanding technical challenges, I love the idea of performers encountering their instruments with virtuosity ... doing something that seems to defy physical boundaries.&rdquo.

The Sonatina for alto clarinet and piano has been composed for didactic purposes, at a clarinet teacher's request. It is a didactic work as it implies both the clarinetist and the pianist to be sufficiently familiar to tonal harmony. The piece is composed in a free style, four movements linked to one another so that it can be played in open form.

Kimmo Hakola's Clarinet Concerto (2001) is finally available as a piano reduction and a solo part! The concerto created world-wide buzz after the premiere, which was augmented after the CD release. The Clarinet Concerto is a rich and original work lasting some 40 minutes. It has four movements: the opening movement is dominated by the aggressive toccata-like pounding typical of Hakola. The slow movement, Hidden Songs, is a soaring, melodic and captivating piece of music. The third movement, Allegro farara, is a wild and whirling Oriental dance in a quirky 7/8 rhythm. The finale, which follows without a break, begins with crowd noises that slowly fade. The movement title, Khasene, is the Yiddish for 'wedding'. The nuptials turn out to be quite raucous as Hakola rolls out poignant pathos and rollicking klezmer look-alikes in turn. The soloist is given scope for improvisation.

Kirmo Lintinen composed his clarinet concerto (2012-13) full of rhythmic drive attempting to write for the orchestra as if it were a large chamber ensemble in which listening closely to the other players is both possible and of supreme importance. All four movements of the clarinet concerto are joined together, and their titles say something: prefazione, danze, confessione and finale. Though differing in mood and texture, they all share themes and motifs. The solo cadenza between the third and last movement alludes, as quasi quodlibet suggests, to many motifs, in this case in the past and in the future. Duration c. 23 minutes. The product includes solo part & piano reduction. The orchestral material (instrumentation 2(II+picc)2(II+c.ing)2(II+cl.b)21-2200-11-str) is available for hire from the publisher.

Composed by Gabriel Grovlez, Lamento et Tarentelle is a piece for clarinet and piano. Initially written for the Paris Conservatoire contest in 1923, it is dedicated to a professor of the Conservatoire, Prosper Mimart. Quite difficult (6, 7), this work is perfect for the transition between the upper intermediate level and advanced. Lamento et Tarentelle is divided into four sections: 1. Lento ma non troppo 2. Vivo (Movement of Tarentelle) 3. A tempo 4. Piú Vivo. This really melodious piece requires the mastering of breathing technique among other specificities. Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) is a renowned composer and conductor. He studied at the same time as Gabriel Fauré and composed numerous pieces for voice and some chamber music.
