Sir Peter Maxwell Davies on the music of Marc Yeats: Marc Yeats’ musical voice is quite unlike anything else; the music is challenging to both performers and audiences, and very communicative. He produces extraordinary compositions that not only look and sound good, but demonstrate a very high level of academic learning, while being breathtakingly original. This composition was written for bass clarinet soloist Sarah Watts, who did extensive research on bass clarinet multiphonics. This piece is a great illustration on the integration of multiphonics in contemporary music.

Composed by Gabriel Grovlez, Lamento et Tarentelle is a piece for clarinet and piano. Initially written for the Paris Conservatoire contest in 1923, it is dedicated to a professor of the Conservatoire, Prosper Mimart. Quite difficult (6, 7), this work is perfect for the transition between the upper intermediate level and advanced. Lamento et Tarentelle is divided into four sections: 1. Lento ma non troppo 2. Vivo (Movement of Tarentelle) 3. A tempo 4. Piú Vivo. This really melodious piece requires the mastering of breathing technique among other specificities. Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) is a renowned composer and conductor. He studied at the same time as Gabriel Fauré and composed numerous pieces for voice and some chamber music.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him.

For the teacher of instrumental music classes, individual differences among students are inevitable. Unfortunately, the lack of flexible materials frequently forces teachers to adopt a quasi-instructional procedure best described as lockstep, where all students in the class rehearse each exercise until the slow members of the class succeed or until the teacher gives up. The Individualized Instructor was designed with the expectation that students are different. With this method, high-, average-, and low-achieving students in a class are able to progress simultaneously at their own rate according to their interest and ability. In addition, the flexibility of the instructional format often allows twelve or more students to perform different musical material simultaneously, thereby eliminating the “follow the leader†approach to music learning. All study materials in the series are musical. Nonmusical exercises are excluded in favor of folk song literature, musical rounds, and musical ensembles. Furthermore, The Individualized Instructor encourages students to think about their music: to analyze unfamiliar material, generalize previously learned concepts and skills, and synthesize all elements into a musically proficient performance. In addition, this series develops many fundamentals (tonality, phrasing, tempo, and musical style) through the use of the singing voice. Singing best provides the “musical†experience that, subsequently, can be applied to the development of musically sensitive instrumental performance. The Three Pieces for solo clarinet (Fantasia Peruana, Partita Peruana and Capricho No. 12) all represent the Cusqueno sound that Guevara Ochoa popularized in Peruvian classical music. The Fantasia was originally scores for solo trumpet, while the Partita was written for solo flute. The Capricho was composed for solo violin. Because Guevara Ochoa was a violin prodigy, this work may most closely reflect Guevara Ochoa's original musical voice. All three pieces contain the hallmarks of his compositional style - short themes, huayno rhythms and pentatonic scales. I believe the Three Pieces provide contrasting representations of Guevara Ochoa's scoring for solo instruments. Additionally, each work presents its own unique challenges while demonstrating the composer's unique Andean compositional style.

The BAND TIME series consists of a number of books containing easy pieces suitable for youth band. BAND TIME Starter is intended for the first year of band playing and includes four-part pieces in many different styles. The difficulty of the pieces increases in parallel with the material covered in the first part of the Look, Listen and Learn method. The first three works, however, are three-part pieces in order to accommodate the limited range of notes available at this stage. The BAND TIME series is suitable for various combinations of instruments provided that the parts are divided in a sensible way (for concert band, fanfare band or brass band). The material for altosaxophone, trombone and baritone/euphonium/bass clarinet is divided into parts 1 and 2 in order to cover all voices using the most popular instruments.
