During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

Israeli pianist Tal Weissman was born in Haifa in 1972, and began his musical training at age four. While a youth, he performed as a soloist with most of the orchestras in Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded an Outstanding Israeli Competitor at the Arthur Rubenstein Competition in 1992, and has won prizes in international piano competitions in Europe.

In 1995, Weissman was accepted for piano studies with the internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue Maria Curcio Diamand in London. During this period of study in London, he was awarded many prizes and performed in most of the major concert venues in England. In 1999, he made a concert tour of the United States.

Tal Weissman returned to Israel in 2004, where he teaches piano privately and continues to perform both in Israel and abroad. His compositions for piano and other instruments express the human sprit as it faces the challenges of the world.

Composer, pianist and conductor Kirmo Lintinen is equally at home in jazz as in the world of classical music. Since the turn of the millennium, his main job has specifically been composing concert music. Stylistically, he has found his biggest inspiration in the Baroque and in early 20th-century Neoclassicism. He composed Rieha (Frolic) as a commission from the Crusell Music Festival in Uusikaupunki, Finland, as the obligatory piece for its international clarinet competition, and it was premiered by the semi-finalists in July 2009.
The first part of Rieha is dominated by spurting arpeggios, trills and changing tempos. Following this impulsive opening is a brief respite, after which the piano and clarinet begin competing, tossing each other quick, accented semiquaver figures. The rhythm soon becomes syncopated and the piece enters the longest section, a sort of hypertuned, lurching ragtime. The closing section recalls all the work's motifs before burning itself out and vanishing like smoke.
Rieha is a consummate virtuoso piece demanding nimble fingers, sharp articulation and a command of tone in all the clarinet's registers. The piano is more than just an accompanying instrument; it is an equal partner. The biggest challenge for the players is synchronising their parts: the changing tempos and metres, and the alternation of quick figures keep the performers on their toes and the audience alert.

The 40 Studies compiled by Cyrille Rose are still today one of the most used by clarinetists. Adapting major violin studies of the 18th and 19th century, Rose made an excellent choice of technical and expressive materials. He freely changed the tone, articulations and note ranges to adapt as much as possible to mechanical and physiological specificities of the clarinet. Nevertheless, each study is a challenge that must be overcome by a slow and patient work which, if properly structured, develops and strengthens greatly the capacity of the clarinetist. Aleksandar Obradovic's Mikro-sonata is a piece that unfortunately disappeared from the clarinet repertoire when it went out of print, but is now back in a new edition. Its first two movements are early explorations of the potential of multi-phonics and other extended techniques for clarinet. The fanciful, jazz-inspired Praeludium draws the listener in and provides a stark contrast for the haunting tones of the Arietta that follows. A quirky, but fun Fughetta rounds out the composition, challenging the clarinetist to highlight a theme that would normally be found in imitation, but in this case is presented by a solo instrument. Obradovic, perhaps the most prolific and respected twentieth-century Serbian composer, dedicated both this work and a previously composed clarinet concerto to his countryman Milenko Stefanovic, who first recorded each of them.
