Know The Score is a guide to quicker learning for advanced clarinettists. It was originally published in 2012 and designed with the DipABRSM Quick Study in mind – a previously unseen extended piece of music for which 5 minutes preparation time was given prior to an assessed performance. The music was at roughly grade 6 level, based on an assumption that a diploma standard player should be capable of tackling the test in this relatively short amount of time. Following the recent withdrawal of the qualification, the continued aim of this newly edited series is to boost the more advanced player’s confidence at quick learning. Two assumptions are made here — that you are a diploma level clarinettist, and that a reasonable level of sight-reading skill is in place. That said, if you’re less proficient at sight-reading, you should find much in the book that will help you to improve and feel more confident. Alternatively, the book will be of interest to teachers seeking varied, approachable repertoire and theory content to support a keen grade 6 pupil’s longer-term learning. The Finnish composer Osmo Tapio Räihälä reports that he experienced a phase whilst working on his Horn Concerto in 2011 during which he had the feeling of “having landed in a deadend”. To find a remedy, he decided to develop a kind of “finger exercise” for composers, comparable to the “warming-up process of an instrumental soloist before performing”. Räihälä remembers furthermore: “Instead of writing for orchestra, I started a short solo piece for clarinet. Little did I know that I had opened a Pandora's box! I wrote 'Soliloque 1: Étoffé' in two days. Perhaps this frenzy caused the music to become restless, with quick turns – in short, a rather virtuosic etude. The clarinet seeks paths, at first without success, but obviously finding one in the end. And what about the Pandora's Box? I had given the title the number one, and during the next two years I wrote five more Soliloques, solos of six to seven minutes, for various instruments, as well as one for soprano a cappella. The title Étoffé means 'rich', or 'well rounded', but also 'fabric' or even a 'patch' - and I felt that I had patched something in my work that was broken; indeed, working on the concerto now gave me a fresh start.”.

Yellow Green was premiered on July 23rd, 2013 at the Teatro Municipal de Niterói (Rio de Janeiro) by the musicians of the Omega Quartet: Maurício Silva, Deusiel da Cunha de Souza, Diego Abreu and Mateus Falkemback (bass clarinet). Approximately 9 minutes in length, the title ' Yellow Green ' is a tribute to the two colours of the Brazilian flag. The introduction gives way to a vast Fugue (marked Vivace) dipped in the colours of swing. The central Adagio floats a dreamy, timeless melody. The brief finale brings together the fugue's thematic material with one last recommendation for the performers: 'Feel jazz'. This invigorating work was recorded for the Chant de Linos label by its dedicatees, the Omega Quartet clarinetists.&rdquo.

The first one presents all the themes such as perfromed by the Tenor Saxophonist on the Audio CD play along furnished with this volume. The second part offers the performer keys for a succesfull improvisation. At the beginning of each part, a pedagogical content gives work trails to explore so as advice on how to use at best this book. Music teachers will also find in this volume a good basic repertory to introduce improvised music styles such a Jazz and Blues to their students. The first track on the Audio CD is for tuning, then each title is developed as follows: The basic theme is played by the tenor saxophonist, accompanied by the keyboard/bass/drum trio, to show the method to the musician The original theme is no more interpreted by the saxophonist and place is left entirely at the performer's disposal who, accompanied by the rhythm section, will give free reins to his creativity (theme exposition followed by an improvisation on the harmonic structure).
