Elle est née en 1876, dans la région des Carpates, en Roumanie, un des pays de l'Europe orientale. Son papa, Sandor était violoniste. Très jeune, la petite a été initiée aux rythmes de son peuple, à l'exubérance des chants de fêtes, à la mélancolie des musiques des anciens. Les yeux de sa maman étaient sombres comme l'ébène. C'est pour cette raison que Zéliona, à 8 ans, a choisi de jouer de la clarinette, cet instrument dont le son l'a immédiatement charmée. Chaque jour elle en a découvert les possibilités et elle s'est perfectionnée sans jamais se lasser. Les enfants, les grandes personnes, l'écoutaient avec admiration... la musique qu'elle faisait naître de son instrument leur allait droit au coeur. Elle a inventé des mélodies pour parler de Tchavoro Le Mannelier, des couleurs du crépuscule, de La Mouche qui la poursuivait par temps de grande chaleur. Puis un jour, une troupe de cirque a croisé son chemin et elle s'est émerveillée des prouesses des jongleurs, du Funambule et du charmeur de serpent. Par RAE JAMES. This work was written for and dedicated to the clarinettist Mark Walton OAM by way of a thank you for all his fine recordings and performances of my music. It was premiered in London by Mark and his accompanist David Miller OAM, on June 29th 2014 in the Princess Alexandra Hall at Royal Over-Seas League, Mayfair in a concert entitled ‘Clarinet Hidden Treasures from England’ which was organised to launch Mark’s CD of the same name. The two-disc album, as its title suggests, contains works for clarinet and piano in a variety of styles by English composers including Mike Cornick, Jonathan FeBland, Paul Harris, Paul Harvey, Joseph Horovitz, Gordon Jacob, Christopher Norton and Sid Phillips. This sheet music album includes two pieces: Cloudy Bay is in the north east of New Zealand’s South Island, brought to world fame by the fine Sauvignon Blanc wine sharing the same name. This movement is very dreamy and reflective in nature and was inspired by Mark’s exquisite, silky sound. Beatin’ about the Bush! is a celebration of Mark’s highly successful pioneering outreach programme of workshops bringing music to young musicians in the Outback of Australia and beyond. Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career. Histoires increased his popularity when it was published in the mid-1920s and Guy Deplus (b. 1924) a prominent French clarinetist arranged the compilation for Clarinet and Piano in 2004 to great acclaim. Joseph Horovitz (b. 1926) is a British composer and conductor who is best known for his involvement the 1951 Festival of Britain and for works such as Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo. HisConcertante (1948) was his first published composition written while he was still studying under Gordon Jacob at the RCM. It was modelled on the Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet but is written in adecidedly 20th century idiom. Originally scored for Clarinet and String Quartet this version for Clarinet and Piano was transcribed by the composer.

This short work for clarinet and piano began as an unaccompanied melody which Bernstein copied from the wall of his periodontist friend Dr. Ron Odrich and later dished-up as a jazz clarinet melody for his friend who also happened to be a jazz clarinettist. Odrich and his composer partner Larry Fallon then used the tune as a basis for a very stylish work for clarinet and piano.
