En fin de recueil figure sur deux pages le tableau des objectifs avec auto-évaluation. Musicalement, une histoire relie toutes ces compositions : Zigana s'appelle en réalité Zeliona. Elle est née en 1876, dans la région des Carpates, en Roumanie, un des pays de l'Europe orientale. Son papa, Sandor était violoniste. Très jeune, la petite a été initiée aux rythmes de son peuple, à l'exubérance des chants de fêtes, à la mélancolie des musiques des anciens. Les yeux de sa maman étaient sombres comme l'ébène. C'est pour cette raison que Zéliona, à 8 ans, a choisi de jouer de la clarinette, cet instrument dont le son l'a immédiatement charmée. Chaque jour elle en a découvert les possibilités et elle s'est perfectionnée sans jamais se lasser. Les enfants, les grandes personnes, l'écoutaient avec admiration... la musique qu'elle faisait naître de son instrument leur allait droit au coeur. Elle a inventé des mélodies pour parler de Tchavoro Le Mannelier, des couleurs du crépuscule, de La Mouche qui la poursuivait par temps de grande chaleur. Puis un jour, une troupe de cirque a croisé son chemin et elle s'est émerveillée des prouesses des jongleurs, du Funambule et du charmeur de serpent. Its expression is shaped by violent changes of tempo and dynamics, clashes between brilliant passagework and distinct articulation, on the one hand, and lyrical phrases, on the other, and a constant contrast between intense sonorities and light textures. The work?s concise form consigns it to the catalogue of so-called miniature pieces. Subito for violin and piano was composed in 1992 for the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. This arrangement for clarinet expands the instrument?s solo repertoire with a work of the highest compositional calibre, representing a mature stage in Witold Lutoslawski?s oeuvre. Among clarinettists, the composer is known principally for the Dance Preludes, which appear both on concert bills and also on the programmes of competitions and auditions.
