This short work for clarinet and piano began as an unaccompanied melody which Bernstein copied from the wall of his periodontist friend Dr. Ron Odrich and later dished-up as a jazz clarinet melody for his friend who also happened to be a jazz clarinettist. Odrich and his composer partner Larry Fallon then used the tune as a basis for a very stylish work for clarinet and piano.

Suite for Emma is written in four movements – Valse the haunting Pavane Ballade and the Scherzo finale – and calls upon the entire range of the clarinet as well as demanding a very high level of musicianship inthe Piano. Although written for Emma Johnson’s clarinet the Suite is a partnership between the instruments.John Dankworth was a towering figure in British jazz almost from the earliest years of his career as a jazzcomposer Saxophonist and clarinetist and as an educator and speaker until his death in 2010. This piece was written for Emma Johnson the 1984 Young Musician of the Year. She has since recorded it.

This concerto is standard clarinet repertoire and these New Weber Editions by the respected clarinet scholar Pamela Weston are of particular interest to clarinet students. She not only provides a modern day fully edited clarinet part for performance purposes but also Weber’s original clarinet part taken from the manuscript for comparison. Par RAE JAMES. This work was written for and dedicated to the clarinettist Mark Walton OAM by way of a thank you for all his fine recordings and performances of my music. It was premiered in London by Mark and his accompanist David Miller OAM, on June 29th 2014 in the Princess Alexandra Hall at Royal Over-Seas League, Mayfair in a concert entitled ‘Clarinet Hidden Treasures from England’ which was organised to launch Mark’s CD of the same name. The two-disc album, as its title suggests, contains works for clarinet and piano in a variety of styles by English composers including Mike Cornick, Jonathan FeBland, Paul Harris, Paul Harvey, Joseph Horovitz, Gordon Jacob, Christopher Norton and Sid Phillips. This sheet music album includes two pieces: Cloudy Bay is in the north east of New Zealand’s South Island, brought to world fame by the fine Sauvignon Blanc wine sharing the same name. This movement is very dreamy and reflective in nature and was inspired by Mark’s exquisite, silky sound. Beatin’ about the Bush! is a celebration of Mark’s highly successful pioneering outreach programme of workshops bringing music to young musicians in the Outback of Australia and beyond. Here is a very beautiful Adagio written in 1821 by Heinrich Baermann, the celebrated dedicatee of works for clarinet written by Weber.
