Hymn to the Fallen one of the most powerful and emotional melodies which appears during the closing credits, evokes a feeling of hope and strength amid the overall tone of reverence. Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for brass band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. For added effect this work can also be performed with a wordless chorus, with parts being available separately.

This work was written in 2005, prompted by the composer's determination that young members of junior, music school and conservatoire wind ensembles should not be limited to transcriptions for lack of original compositions, especially contemporary ones. The new devices used in the Little Suite are suitable for student players to try out. Indeed, they enjoy them - for instance, purring or whistling into the instrument. Each of the three-or-four-minute movements of this four-movement work can also be performed separately. The titles of the movements are the following: 1. In cheerful mood, 2. Song, 3. Joke, 4. March. This music in modern idiom, full ofinteresting new effects, offers young players an opportunity for enjoyable music-making together, and at the same time prepares them for playing more difficult contemporary works. ‘Three City Sketches’ was commissioned for Soli Deo Gloria Alkmaar from the Netherlands. The work’s three movements depict different aspects of the orchestra’s hometown. This is an exciting and epic piece for a contest or thematic concert. Three City Sketches werd geschreven in opdracht van Soli Deo Gloria Alkmaar. Based on traditional Scottish melodies, Highland Fantasy begins with the jolly romp The Wee Cooper o' Fife and moves into the yearning ballad Highland Laddie. Fraser cleverly merges the two themes as the work comes to a joyously majestic close.This work is mainly based on traditional Scottish melodies. After a brief introduction we hear The Wee Cooper o' Fife played firstly by a solo trumpet followed by a tutti version. Highland Laddie appears, initially featuring saxophones and then passed around the band. The slow middle section is an original which I felt complemented the other melodies in the piece. A recapulation leads to a final section with an augmented version of Highland Laddie from the middle of the band with a version of The Wee Cooper in the upper winds. The work ends with a final majestic statement.

As the title implies, this piece is written in a contemplative manner for beginning students. It is a good piece to demonstrate basic compositional techniques that the students will be able identify easily in the piece. It begins with a lush opening section with an elegant melody to work on musicianship. This is contrasted by the uptempo section of the piece based on the same basic musical material, but in a varied style and frolicking feel. A very satisfying piece for beginning wind players.Contemplation: the action to look thoughtfully at something for a long time.When composing music that will be used with younger students, I want to stimulate thoughtfulness in them. In this particular piece I want the students to be able to stretch their musicianship beyond their experience on their instruments to play in a contemplative manner. To me, this is the essence of musical playing in an emotional and thoughtful way. It is something that cannot be stressed enough, even in students that have just begun to play. As soon as possible, they should be asked to put themselves into the music and make it more than the notes and rhythms on the page.This piece is my attempt to provide very young students, who are just beginning their musical journey, with something they can reach technically, but have to stretch for musically. The amount of notes and rhythms is limited, but students should strive for beauty of tone, good phrasing and emotional involvement.After a short introduction, the heartfelt main theme begins at a lyrical and slow tempo. This is developed with the addition of a secondary theme, featuring the lower voices, before the piece leads to an Allegro section that is based on the same musical material with a difference in tempo and a variation in rhythm patterns. The piece can serve to show students that the same basic music can have an entirely different emotional connection with differences in tempo, rhythm and style, with the first section of the piece being sentimental and the faster section being more joyous in nature. As with all of my pieces for younger students, it is completely acceptable to me for you to adjust the tempo to fit the educational needs of your students.It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. It begins with a lush opening section with an elegant melody to work on musicianship. This is contrasted by the up tempo section of the piece based on the same basic musical material, but in a varied style and frolicking feel. The operetta The Gipsy Baron is, together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat), the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance, original musical ideas, compelling Viennese dances, fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias, were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem, however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality, another melody was chosen. Program Notes: It was a happy coincidence that the commission for SINFONIA XVI: TRANSCENDENTAL VIENNA came from the Henry David Thoreau School located in Vienna, Virginia. Thoreau is one of the magic names in American culture: Henry David Thoreau, one of the leading figures of the Transcendentalist movement, centered in 19th-century New England, left us a body of unique philosophical and poetical writings. To utter the words, Walden Pond, is to invoke an America long past in physical actuality, but still present in the minds and hearts of many American citizens. The name, Vienna, of course, summons thoughts of the Old World: culture, fine food, wine, civilized cities. While contemplating the form that SINFONIA XVI should take, I found myself thinking of two pillars of Viennese culture: expressionism and the waltz. Musically speaking, expressionism reached a zenith in the works of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg. It was Berg, in particular, that I wanted to invoke in the outer movements of my composition. I knew I would also have to include a waltz, and an invocation of the mysterious forces that are contained in both expressionism and transcendentalism. Thus was the structure of the work generated. The outer movements with their vision of the night sky and the stars, Aldebaran and Sirius, frame the central movements, which are essentially two versions of the same material, and are quieter and less dramatic. The outer movements are symmetrical, and share both pitch and rhythmic materials. Accordingly, I see the work as a ternary form, with the central movements forming a unit within the outer frame: A (Movement 1) B (Movements 2 & 3) A' (Movement 4). Harmonically, the work can be summarized by the two pitch-series which occur in the opening bars of Movement 1: the initial 12-note row, with a tonal center on F-sharp (measures 1-6), and the subsequent D-minor Dorian 7-note row (beginning in measure 14). Aspects of these materials occur in all four movements, but they are most strongly present in Movements 1 and 4. Note that the 12-note row is not subjected to the usual serial procedures, but instead is treated as a signifier and is left unchanged. Since the fourth movement takes up where the first movement leaves off, I can conceive of one interpretation of SINFONIA XVI as an evocation of Thoreau himself contemplating two of the brightest stars on a clear, cold night. Aldebaran is an orange, first-magnitude star, located in the constellation Taurus; Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the sky, and is located in the constellation Canis Major. Thoreau interrupts his star-gazing to entertain some inward thoughts, waking dreams, as it were, then returns his gaze to the splendid night sky and all its treasures. Although many other interpretations of the material are possible, it is important to remember that the abstract materials of the piece -- pitch, rhythm, structure -- are what count the most. Jan de Haan took as a starting point for Music for a Solemnity an old custom from the Dutch town of Hoogeveen, by which the faithful are called to church with drums. It was also inspired by the music of John Williams. This unusual combination has resulted in a solemn work in which old traditional methods are united with modern rhythms and melodic lines. Voor Music for a Solemnity liet Jan de Haan zich enerzijds inspireren door de eeuwenoude traditie in de Drentse stad Hoogeveen om met trommels tot de kerkgang op te roepen en anderzijds door de muziek van de succesvolle Amerikaansecomponist John Williams. Deze bijzondere combinatie resulteerde in een feestelijk werk met ritmische patronen en melodische lijnen die getuigen van respect voor Williams’ oeuvre.Zu Music for a Solemnity ließ sich der Komponist einerseits vom alten Brauch der niederländischen Stadt Hoogeveen, mit Trommeln zum Kirchgang zu rufen, und andererseits von der Musik von John Williams inspirieren. Diese ungewöhnliche Kombination mündete in ein festliches Werk, in welchem sich alte Tradition in schönster Weise mit modernen Rhythmen und melodischen Linien vereinen. Il y a quatre siècles, l’église de la ville d’Hoogeveen aux Pays-Bas n’avait pas de carillon. Les fidèles décidèrent de se rassembler pour le culte dominical au son d’un tambour. Aujourd’hui, Hoogeveen possède plusieurs carillons mais continue d’honorer cette tradition ancienne. Music for a Solemnity (Musique pour une occasion solennelle) est une oeuvre festive en hommage au tambour d’Hoogeveen. Les lignes mélodiques et les motifs rythmiques sont inspirés de la musique du célèbre compositeur américain John Williams qui Jan de Haan voue une grande admiration.Una composizione che riprende le vicende del villaggio olandese di Hoogeveen nel XVII secolo. Dato che la chiesa non aveva un campanile, fu deciso di utilizzare un tamburino per chiamare i cittadini a messa. Benché oggi la cittadina sia ricca di campane, Hoogeveen onora questa antica tradizione del tamburino. Music for a Solemnity è un brano festivo ispirato dal tamburino da un lato, ma anche dalla musica di John Williams, le cui linee melodiche e la scrittura ritmica influenzano da sempre Jan de Haan.
