About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

Born in Venezuela, but raised in Paris, Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) was drawn early in life to fashionable salons, singing his own songs from the piano. There he mingled with such luminaries as Mallarme and Proust, the latter with whom he formed an amorous relationship. After the first world war, he accepted an appointment of voice teaching at the École normale de music de Paris. His colleagues included Nadia Boulanger, Pablo Casals, and Jacques Thibaud. One of many musical works he composed for the stage during this time, Mozart, a musical comedy (comédie musicale) in 3 Acts, IRH 52, premiered at the Theatre Edouard VII in Paris on December 2, 1925. The libretto was written by Sacha Guitry for their first of two collaborations. The Mozart Overture, here edited by R. Mark Rogers, serves as a vibrant introduction to this underrepresented work. Instrumentation: 2.1.1.1: 2.1.00: Pno: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).

What kind of music would Mozart write if he were alive today and had been exposed to jazz, rock 'n' roll, and polytonality? This piece supposes that he would start with what he knew and then figure it out on the fly! Mozart's Sandbox is a piece rich with depth and humor, but thoughtfully scored for young bands.

László Dubrovay's work, written in 2006, on the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, is a salute of a 21st-century composer to one of the greatest geniuses in the history of music. The composer builds his original ideas on one of the best-known melodies of The Marriage of Figaro (Figaro's aria: ''Non pi? andrai, farfallone amoroso''). The series of variations on the theme of the aria is created by the involvement of special instruments, and by fully harnessing their technical abilities, while Dubrovay's hallmark of a perfect balance and peculiar compositional tone is realised on an exceptionally large orchestra. The work is suited to illustrate the potentials of crossovers between different periods in the history of music, but it can also be played at a festive, thematic concert.

David Brobrowitz deftly transcribes the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 29 in A, K. 201 (1774). Mr. Bobrowitz transposes the theme up to the more comfortable key of B-flat and adds dynamics, slurs, and articulations to help young musicians capture the style of the Classical period.
