Cathedrals have always appealed to the imagination. Hundreds of years of manpower have been invested in their building and it is not for nothing that today they represent imposing symbols of architecture and history. The cathedral is also a great source of inspiration for compositions drawing on a full palette of acoustic echo effects Gregorian melodies and organ based choral themes.The work ?Catedrals? opens with a five tone motif using double tonguing which resonates through space. Then comes a Gregorian antiphonal theme ?Salve Regina? which is heard in the euphonium and later combines with the opening motif. The quicker passage that follows is basedentirely on the intervals in the motif which by now has added rhythmic variations and develops in different forms including a fugue. The work then builds towards its first climax from which unusual muted sounds emerge creating an atmosphere shrouded in mystery.Gradually more melodious fragments are added to the Gregorian antiphonal theme which develops into an expansive choral emulating the organ and which rises above the sound mass. The work grows more powerful and brilliant in sound until it culminates in a short and explosive finale wherein elements from the whole work come together.

Arr. Wil Van Der Beek. À travers les siècles et de nos jours encore, Noël a été un thème d?inspiration privilégié pour les compositeurs. A Classical Christmas (?Noël classique?) rassemble des oeuvres de trois grands compositeurs français du XIXe siècle. Le premier mouvement nous fait découvrir César Franck (1822-1890), grand organiste et brillant compositeur, qui a donné une réelle valeur artistique à certains chants de Noël français traditionnels. Ce mouvement apaisé, au charme captivant, offre de nombreuses possibilités en termes de nuances et d?expression. La percussion intervient mais ne tient qu?un rôle modeste. Le thème de l?oratorio L?Enfance du Christ d?Hector Berlioz(1803-1869) est au centre du deuxième mouvement. Le thème est conçu comme une ode à la sainte Famille. Ce deuxième mouvement, expressif et tendre, possède un caractère intimiste. Le thème du troisième et dernier mouvement est extrait de l?Oratorio de Noël de Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921). Il s?agit d?une page bien connue, le célèbre choeur final Tollite Hostias. This three-movement symphony musically depicts the history of Hungary. Key historical figures wars and other important events from this country inspired all three movements. The first movement depicts Atilla the King of the Huns and is characterised by fear threat and aggression. The second movement focuses on ?rp?d the founder of the Hungarian State and the final movement is named after Istv?n the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary. The beautiful theme of the national hymn appears throughout the symphony however it is often partially hidden. It is used as a ???thread ??? hardly recognizable at the beginning becoming more and more obvious near the end and itconcludes the symphony as the ???final apotheosis ??? making the band sound like a majestic living organ.

Fantasy on the canon Freu' dich des Lebens-L?année 2008 marque le 400e anniversaire de la fondation de la ville de Québec (1608-2008) au Canada. Pour célébrer cet événement la Musique des Voltigeurs de Québec une unité d?infanterie de la force terrestre des Forces canadiennes a fait appel au compositeur Philip Sparke pour l?écriture de deux œuvres de concert (disponibles sur un compact disc édité spécialement pour cette occasion). Philip Sparke a composé Sounds of the Saint Lawrence (Échos du Saint-Laurent) une suite de chants traditionnels québécois et cette fantaisie libre sur le canon Freu? dich des Lebens de Ludwig van Beethoven. L?histoire de ce canon est absolument fascinante. En1822 Théodore Frédéric Molt un professeur auteur pianiste et organiste allemand - ancien soldat dans l'armée napoléonienne ayant combattu à Waterloo - arrive à Québec. En 1825 il retourne en Europe afin de parfaire sa formation. Au cours de son séjour il rend visite à Beethoven. Quelques jours plus tard il fait parvenir une lettre au compositeur sourd en incluant une feuille blanche sur laquelle il lui demande d'écrire « du fond de son grand cœur » un souvenir « qui restera pour moi à une distance qu'il me faudra presque 3000 heures pour parcourir un document éternellement précieux. »Beethoven accepte et le 16 décembre 1825 (jour de ses cinquante-cinq ans) il présente à Théodore Molt le canon Freu? dich des Lebens Le manuscrit est actuellement conservé dans une collection canadienne.Beethoven?s Greeting (?La signature de Beethoven?) débute avec une introduction lente basée sur le canon. S?ensuit un Vivo qui sera repris ultérieurement sous la forme d?un déchant à la mélodie du canon. Le thème du canon est chanté par le chœur à quatre voix (SATB) optionnel (AMP 243-050) mais la mélodie est également présente dans l?orchestration.
