Kingâ??s greatest hit ever, was first released in 1961 as the b-side of a single, but as it soon went to number one on the RandB charts and to number one of the pop charts, the single was released again with Stand By Me as the a-side. In 1986 it was rereleased again, on the release of the movie by the same name, and it is also well-known through countless cover versions by famous singers. Now, Stand By Me is available for a flexible five part instrumentation.
Stand by Me, is waarschijnlijk wel de grootste hit van Ben E. King. In 1961 werd het nummer als B-kant van een single uitgebracht. Maar binnen de kortste keren stond Stand by Me op nummer 1 in de RandBhitlijsten en verwierf het eenvierde plaats in de pop charts. Niet in de laatste plaats door de gelijknamige film uit 1986 en de talrijke coverversies is dit nummer nog steeds bij jong en oud bekend én geliefd. Zet hem op uw programma en succes is gegarandeer!

The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate.It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.Philip Sparke
De componist schrijft:Op 11 maart 2011 vond er vlak bij de noordkust van Japan een enorme aardbeving - 9.0 op de schaal van Richter - plaats.Ik maak deze werkbeschrijving nauwelijks een week later en het aantal doden dat de aardbevingen de daaropvolgende tsunami hebben geëist, komt al uit boven de 6000, terwijl er nog steeds duizenden mensen worden vermist.Ik heb veel vrienden die met orkesten in heel Japan werken, en een van hen, Yutaka Nishida, steldevoor dat ik een stuk zou schrijven om geld bij elkaar te krijgen voor hulp aan de slachtoffers van de ramp. Der Komponist schreibt über sein Stück:Am 11. März 2011 ereignete sich ein Erdbeben der Stärke 9,0 vor der nordöstlichen Küste Japans.Diese Werkbeschreibung schreibe ich nur eine Woche später. Die Zahl der Todesopfer des Erdbebens und des dadurch ausgelösten Tsunamis überschreitet bereits die 6000, wobei noch tausende Menschen als vermisst gelten.Ich habe zahlreiche Freunde in Japan, die mit vielen Blasorchestern im ganzen Land verbunden sind. Einer dieser Freunde, Yutaka Nishida, schlug mir vor, ein Stück zu schreiben, um mit dem Erlös den von der Katastrophe betroffenen Menschen zu helfen. Ich war gleich begeistert von dieser Idee und habe daraufhin Cantilena(ein Brass-Band-Stück, das ich jüngst für das Grenland International Brass Festival in Norwegen komponierte) für Blasorchester bearbeitet und ihm zu Ehren meiner Freunde im Land der aufgehenden Sonne einen neuen Titel gegeben.Ich werde meine Tantiemen für dieses Stück dem Hilfsfonds des Japanischen Roten Kreuzes spenden. Le 11 mars 2011, un violent séisme de magnitude 9.0 s’est produit près de la côte nord-est du Japon.
J’écris cette note de programme tout juste une semaine après la terrible catastrophe, et le nombre de morts causé par le tremblement de terre et le tsunami provoqué par ce dernier, s’élève déj plus de 6000 personnes, tout en sachant que des milliers d’autres sont toujours portées disparues.
J’ai beaucoup d’amis dans le milieu des Orchestres Vent au Japon et l’un d’entre eux, Yutaka Nishida, m’a suggéré d’écrire une œuvre destinée collecter des fonds pour venir en aide aux personnes affectées par ce cataclysme. Ayant étéimmédiatement séduit par sa proposition, j’ai écrit un arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie de la pièce Cantilena (une œuvre pour Brass Band récemment commandée par le Grenland International Brass Festival, en Norvège), et lui ai donné un nouveau titre en hommage mes amis du Pays du Soleil Levant : The Sun Will Rise Again (Le soleil se lèvera nouveau).
Je reverserai l’intégralité des droits d’auteur de ce morceau au fonds de secours de la Croix-Rouge japonaise. En outre, je suis ravi d’annoncer que mon distributeur De Haske, qui a généreusement décidé de donner tous les bénéfices nets sur les ventes de cette œuvre, s’est engagé effectuer immédiatement un versement substantiel la Croix-Rouge afin que le Japon puisse profiter sans délai de l’aide modeste générée par ce projet.
J’espère très sincèrement que celui-ci permettra aux Orchestres Vent du monde entier de soutenir le peuple japonais, pour qui la musique joue un rôle important,

In Concerto dââ¬â¢Amore, a maestoso opening is followed by a quick and energetic movement that leads to a magnificent adagio. A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life.
In Concerto dââ¬â¢Amore worden drie verschillende stijlen gecombineerd: barok, pop en jazz. De maestoso introductie van de compositie klinkt als een barokouverture. Dan volgt een energiek gedeelte in popstijl, dat uitmondt in eenadagio. Een motief daaruit is daarna te horen in een swingende passage, waarna het werk besluit met de terugkeer van het adagio in een nieuw jasje.
Concerto dââ¬â¢Amore vereinigt drei unterschiedliche Stile: Barock, Pop und Jazz. Die Maestoso bezeichnete Einleitung der Komposition klingt wie eine barocke Ouvertüre. Es folgt ein energiereicher Abschnitt im Pop-Stil, der wiederum zu einem Adagio führt. Ein Motiv aus diesem Adagio ist in der darauf folgenden Swing-Passage zu hören. Dann kehrt Adagio in neuem Gewand zurück, um das Werk zu beenden.
Concerto dââ¬â¢Amore est composé de trois périodes thématiques aux caractéristiques de la musique baroque, pop et jazz. Lââ¬â¢introduction majestueuse, aux allures dââ¬â¢ouverture baroque, chemine vers un passage vif et énergique écrit dans le style de la musique pop. Lââ¬â¢adagio qui lui succède progresse vers un passage aux inflexions de swing. János Galli (1921-2006) was a conductor, composer, music teacher, a well-known and highly respected personality in Hungarian wind music life. As a music teacher he directed numerous string and wind ensembles and choirs, made hundreds of transcriptions for wind orchestras, and instrumented works for ensembles of all sizes and formations. The most important of his works are his series of volumes of marches, folksong arrangements and church music. He was excellent at instrumentation. For its fine sound and easy playability we recommend to youth wind bands and their conductors this work of his composed in memory of the king who founded the Hungarian state.
János Galli (1921-2006) Chorleiter, Komponist und Musiklehrer, war in den ungarischen Bläserkreisen eine bekannte und anerkannte Persönlichkeit. Als Musiklehrer leitete er zahlreiche Streich- und Bläserensembles und Chöre, fertigte mehrere hundert Transkriptionen für Bläserorchester an und instrumentierte Werke für verschieden große Orchester unterschiedlicher Besetzung. Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and, appropriately, captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small, playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.
Het Engelse woord ‘bliss’ betekent heerlijkheid of zaligheid. De titel is ontleend aan de oorsprong van het Noord-Brabantse dorp Dussen, dat bestaat uit drie voormalige ‘heerlijkheden’ (landgoederen): Munsterkerk, Muilkerk en Heer Aartswaarde. Hetwerk omvat een drietal impressies. Het eerste deel schetst het verleden en het heden van Dussen. Het verleden komt tot uiting in de ‘klassieke’ inleiding, het heden in het snellere en meer dynamische vervolg. Dat de geschiedenis altijd een rol blijftspelen, blijkt uit het slot van dit deel, waarin het beginthema ge ntegreerd wordt in het tempo van het heden. In het tweede deel weerklinken het riviertje de Dusse en het kasteel - tweekarakteristieke elementen van Dussen. Het stromen van het wateris hoorbaar in de trillers van de saxofoons, gecombineerd met het klokkenspel en de bar chimes. Tegelijkertijd is er een lyrische melodie te horen, die zacht begint en steeds sterker wordt, tot het gehele orkest speelt. Op het hoogtepunt gaat dezemelodie over in een muzikale weerspiegeling van het kasteel, dat ook een vooraanstaande rol speelt in de ‘heerlijkheid’ van Dussen. Vanuit de statigheid van het kasteel eindigt dit deel zoals het is begonnen: met het kabbelende riviertje in deverte.Het derde deel schetst de culturele, sportieve en zakelijke levendigheid onder de Dussense bevolking, vertaald in een staccatothema afgewisseld met verrassende ritmische wendingen. In het slot van dit deel komt het beginthema terug, om tebenadrukken dat Dussen zonder zijn geschiedenis Dussen niet zou zijn.
Bliss (englisch für Glückseligkeit) - vermittelt drei Impressionen eines Dorfes im schönen Brabant. Der klassisch“ eingeleitete erste Satz handelt von der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart, während im zweiten Satz Saxophone und Glockenspiel das Murmeln des kleinen Flusses anschaulich darstellen, bevor das gesamte Blasorchester das alte Schloss beschreibt. Der rhythmisch interessante dritte Teil dieses abwechslungsreichen Stückes handelt von den vielfältigen Aktivitäten des dörflichen Lebens.

In de tijd van Claude Debussy gaf muziek het geluid van de natuur weer en stond verbeeldingskracht in hoog aanzien. Het is deze Franse sensibiliteit die Maxime Aulio’s werk Whispering Wind kenmerkt, met vluchtigelijnen en heldere kleuren. De wind raakt het doek, suggereert en roept slechts op, maar met een indrukwekkende precisie. Een mooie en bijzondere compositie!

Dieu vénéré ou égérie des poètes, force motrice ou messager aérien, il emprunte toutes les formes, selon les peuples ou les époques. Les chemins du vent sont ceux qui ne sont pas tracés d’avance ; ils nous racontent mille histoires venues d’ailleurs. Les murmures du vent sont les sentiers diaphanes de l’ me, les couleurs de l’éphémère, la poésie des sons. Avec Claude Debussy, la musique écoutait les voix de la nature et l'imagination retrouvait auprès d'elleses droits primitifs. Chaque instrument semblait fait d’impressions et de suggestions. La partition cessait d'être développement pour devenir enveloppement. Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer’s education, he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style†of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.

A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life.
In Concerto d’Amore worden drie verschillende stijlen gecombineerd: barok, pop en jazz. De maestoso introductie van de compositie klinkt als een barokouverture. Dan volgt een energiek gedeelte in popstijl, dat uitmondt in een adagio. Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and, appropriately, captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small, playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.
Het Engelse woord ‘bliss’ betekent heerlijkheid of zaligheid. De titel is ontleend aan de oorsprong van het Noord-Brabantse dorp Dussen, dat bestaat uit drie voormalige ‘heerlijkheden’ (landgoederen): Munsterkerk, Muilkerk en Heer Aartswaarde. Hetwerk omvat een drietal impressies. Het eerste deel schetst het verleden en het heden van Dussen. Het verleden komt tot uiting in de ‘klassieke’ inleiding, het heden in het snellere en meer dynamische vervolg. Dat de geschiedenis altijd een rol blijftspelen, blijkt uit het slot van dit deel, waarin het beginthema ge ntegreerd wordt in het tempo van het heden. In het tweede deel weerklinken het riviertje de Dusse en het kasteel - tweekarakteristieke elementen van Dussen. Het stromen van het wateris hoorbaar in de trillers van de saxofoons, gecombineerd met het klokkenspel en de bar chimes. Tegelijkertijd is er een lyrische melodie te horen, die zacht begint en steeds sterker wordt, tot het gehele orkest speelt. Op het hoogtepunt gaat dezemelodie over in een muzikale weerspiegeling van het kasteel, dat ook een vooraanstaande rol speelt in de ‘heerlijkheid’ van Dussen. Vanuit de statigheid van het kasteel eindigt dit deel zoals het is begonnen: met het kabbelende riviertje in deverte.Het derde deel schetst de culturele, sportieve en zakelijke levendigheid onder de Dussense bevolking, vertaald in een staccatothema afgewisseld met verrassende ritmische wendingen. In het slot van dit deel komt het beginthema terug, om tebenadrukken dat Dussen zonder zijn geschiedenis Dussen niet zou zijn.
Bliss (englisch für Glückseligkeit) - vermittelt drei Impressionen eines Dorfes im schönen Brabant. Der klassisch“ eingeleitete erste Satz handelt von der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart, während im zweiten Satz Saxophone und Glockenspiel das Murmeln des kleinen Flusses anschaulich darstellen, bevor das gesamte Blasorchester das alte Schloss beschreibt. Der rhythmisch interessante dritte Teil dieses abwechslungsreichen Stückes handelt von den vielfältigen Aktivitäten des dörflichen Lebens.

His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn’t We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris’ seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. Philip Sparke has made this excellentarrangement for concert band, which is sure to become a regular feature on your concert programme.

Philip Sparke selected two well-known marches from the region around Southern Belgium and Luxembourg as the basis for his March Celebration: after we hear an original march theme and second theme in the bass, extracts from the Hammelsmarsh (Hammelmarsch) and the spirited Marsch der Ardennen-Jager, which has become a kind of unofficial national anthem in these parts. This festive march is rounded off with another appearance of Philip Sparke's original theme.
In March Celebration verwerkte de componist twee marsen uit het Zuiden van Belgie en Luxemburg. Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer’s education, he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style†of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.

In Concerto d’Amore, a maestoso opening is followed by a quick and energetic movement that leads to a magnificent adagio. A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life.
In Concerto d’Amore worden drie verschillende stijlen gecombineerd: barok, pop en jazz. De maestoso introductie van de compositie klinkt als een barokouverture. Dan volgt een energiek gedeelte in popstijl, dat uitmondt in eenadagio. This melodic motive is used throughout with slight variations depending on the instrument voicing etc. Care should be taken at m. 10 that the Timpani roll helps to bridge our transition from an exposed section to full tutti. Care should be taken so that the tempo change at m. 19 is brisk and avoids the low brass turning into stomping. Accessories like the China cymbal and tambourine can become overpowering. I recommend having students think of these effects as background in order to make sure they don’t POP out. The dynamic changes at mm. 27-35 should be subito similar to orchestral dynamic changes. Avoid unwritten crescendos in this section. Measures 60–64 are a great opportunity to teach those unwritten dynamics that make music so enjoyable as we lead up to the finale.
