“The Old Fortress of Luxembourg” is a commissioned work by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture for the overture of the official ceremony of Luxembourg's National Day. The piece is less concerned with history, but rather draws inspiration from the architecture of the ancient fortress of Luxembourg, known as “Lucilinburhuc.” The fortress, over 1000 years old and also referred to as the “Gibraltar of the North,” primarily consists today of the Bock Rock, the crypt, the casemates (an underground defense system consisting of kilometers of tunnels), and the Holy Spirit Citadel. These elements are portrayed through radiant fanfare sounds, rhythmic orchestral movements, patriotic choral melodies, and at times, somber musical depictions. As an optional highlight, a choir, supported by a boys' choir, interprets the newly composed text of the third verse of the Luxembourgish National Anthem, adding an additional touch of patriotic grandeur to this piece.

This thought-provoking book contains seven high-level exchanges between a leading wind band practitioner and a music education philosopher. Each section of The Future of the Wind Band grapples with the most profound issues facing the music education profession and the path of instrumental music education in our schools: Relevance: What relevance, if any, does the wind band have both to today’s students and to culture more broadly in the twenty-first century? What relevance does the band experience hold for students’ everyday life? Repertoire: What is the relationship between the repertoire performed by wind ensembles and the larger musical world? Pedagogy: What constitutes best practice in terms of musical pedagogy and rehearsal technique within the large-ensemble experience? Creativity: Can the wind band function as a vehicle for enhancing the individual creativity of its members? Economic Justice: How do issues of social class and the distribution of wealth relate to broader questions of social justice within the context of instrumental music education? Professional Ethics: What are the primary ethical responsibilities of the wind band conductor? Democratic Citizenship: What relationship, if any, can be drawn between membership in the wind band and citizen participation in democracy? Such exchanges can only strengthen our profession and pay rich dividends in our musical and educational work with the students we serve. Editor of this book, William (Bill) M. Perrine is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he directs the wind ensemble, marching band, and community orchestra.

Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata SÃ¥ngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it awarm reception. The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious andintimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

Touted as Britain's second national anthem, this stately tune by C. Hubert H. Parry transcribes beautifully for wind band and would be perfect for concert or festival settings.By the late 19th century Charles Hubert Parry was probably the most influential figure in English music. His works were performed at all the major festivals and as Director of the Royal College of Music, London, he founded a tradition of teaching form which many of the finest British composers benefitted. Much of his music nowadays in scarcely performed but some works have retained their popularity and none more than his setting of Blake's Jerusalem, published in 1916 and instantly taken up as an anthem during the First World War. Today it rivals Land of Hope and Glory in expressing the spirit of England in music.

The Last Friend of Napoleon is based on a true piece of Dutch history. In October 1813, when Napoleon was beaten after his unsuccessful Russian campaign, the French withdrew from the Netherlands. At the beginning of 1814, the whole country had been liberated except for the town of Delfzijl, still occupied by French troops. This programmatic work is about political and military stubbornness, chasing dreams, and about love always following its own unequalled way. Being one of the most acknowledged composers of today, Dirk Brossé has created an epic work that depicts a dramatic story, using the full range of the symphonic band resulting in challenging brass passages, a widerange of percussion and a lot of strong, beautiful and melodic material. The Last Friend of Napoleon is gebaseerd op een waargebeurd stukje Nederlandse geschiedenis. The Last Friend of Napoleon est basé sur une histoire vraie néerlandaise.

Following the death of his mother in 1888, a depressed Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) decided to take a trip to his favorite destination, North Africa, travelling to Ceylon, then to Alexandria and Cairo over the period of several months. While he was in Egypt, he composed his fantasia for piano and orchestra, AFRICA, Op. 89. Dedicated to pianist Marie-Aimée Roger-Miclos, it premiered on October 25, 1891, with the dedicatee playing the solo, and the work was an immediate success both at the premiere and after, which pleased Saint-Saëns a great deal to the point that he considered AFRICA a signature work. Borrowing themes and techniques from North African music, the fantasy draws on material he heard in Algeria and Egypt, offering an exotic sound to those listening in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This concertante is notable also as one of the first works to be recorded with the composer as soloist, with a surviving 1904 recording with Saint-Saëns at the piano. This colorful piece continues to be performed regularly today. Reprint edition. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.0+2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.

This beautiful setting of one of the most popular hymns ever written, Christ The Lord is Risen Today, was respectfully commissioned by the Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Mu in memory of James Morgan. Its musical impact is undeniably both breathtaking and stunning beyond all descriptive words. The emotional conclusion of this work allows for the audience to sing the hymn while an antiphonal brass section soars high above with emotional reverence. Both of these creative ideas are purely optional, but they should be definitely thought of as highly effective when applied. Inspiring!

A simple yet elegant setting provides a poignant underscoring for the moving words of Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural speech in this work for band with narrator. The inspirational message is as timely today as it was on March 4, 1861.

The French composer Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) witnessed many important developments in the history of music ? from Luigi Cherubini to Richard Wagner. His extensive output consisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of these are still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The story concerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The overture has a classical structure and is filled with striking themes and motifs and has a particularly unusual introduction (for the time) with the snare drum taking the leading role!
