A dream inspired Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) to compose The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Kahn, based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The composer originally wrote it for piano in 1912. Four years later, at the encouragement of Ferruccio Busoni, he expanded it into a shimmering symphonic poem. Following the first performance in the autumn of 1919 under the direction of Pierre Monteux, it achieved great success and remains one of his most frequently-performed works today. The work reveals the influence of French impressionism, meandering through the lush gardens of the legendary palace. This edition by Gregory Vaught is part of the Nieweg Performance Editions series. Born in Venezuela, but raised in Paris, Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) was drawn early in life to fashionable salons, singing his own songs from the piano. There he mingled with such luminaries as Mallarme and Proust, the latter with whom he formed an amorous relationship. After the first world war, he accepted an appointment of voice teaching at the École normale de music de Paris. His colleagues included Nadia Boulanger, Pablo Casals, and Jacques Thibaud. One of many musical works he composed for the stage during this time, Mozart, a musical comedy (comĂ©die musicale) in 3 Acts, IRH 52, premiered at the Theatre Edouard VII in Paris on December 2, 1925. The libretto was written by Sacha Guitry for their first of two collaborations. The Mozart Overture, here edited by R. Mark Rogers, serves as a vibrant introduction to this underrepresented work. Johann Wanhal (Vanhal) was an important classical composer from Bohemian/Czech heritage (1739-1813). His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses. Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello. In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and classical wind ensemble by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University. The Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona (1896-1963) wrote many works labelled as Afro-Cuban, and sorting them all can be difficult. While some are lost and others are scattered about, the 1930 piano suite titled Danzas Afro-Cubanas, a collection of six of the dances, remains a core group in the style. La Comparsa (Carnival Procession) is the sixth dance in the suite, and it is based on the traditional parade and ceremony that occurs during Carnival season in Cuba. This composition starts with the gradual approach of the procession and carries one through all the excitement until the last faint notes of the departing parade die away in the distance. This version for full orchestra has been arranged by Morton Gould (1913-1996). This large-scale three-movement work, commissioned by Ray Cramer and the Indiana University Wind Ensemble, embodies the transformation of silence into sound. The opening movement is sparse, utilizing mallet percussion, harp, and piano to create a floating sense of timelessness. Featuring extensive solo flute, this floating texture gradually builds over several minutes, ultimately launching itself into a grandiose, warm, harmonically consonant blanket of sound. The second movement continues the focus on solo flute, and again opens slowly, gradually gaining momentum, but at a faster pace than in the first movement. The music spirals upward and outward, but instead of reaching a plateau, winds itself out and comes to a grinding halt in the upper range of the ensemble. Five brief, solemn chords conclude the movement, which immediately erupts into Movement III, music of unceasing, unsettling, motion, propelled by a driving ostinato which is repeatedly interrupted by bittersweet moments of lyricism, all the while pushing toward an unforgiving climax. The movements may also be performed separately. There is no explicit narrative to the piece, though many particular elements do have personal quasi-biographical significance. Ultimately, this is music of both personal and musical transformation.
