Commissioned for the 2012 South Carolina All-State High School Band Jay's impressive three-movement suite based on melodies from the early American “Sacred Harp” singing tradition is a masterwork of dramaticorchestrational devices. “Stratfield” opens with a striking statement by the saxes and double reeds then builds intensity using woodwind flourishes and soaring brass lines. “Idumea” begins in a quiet anddelicate manner then gives way to thundering percussion and striking harmonic effects. The joyous “Pisgah” has a barn dance quality that provides the perfect conclusion to this powerful work for winds. Dur: c. 8:00

Inspired by the music of Frank Erickson Chris Sharp offers this overture with a renaissance quality to it. The melody moves effectively between the different choirs as the piece develops. In addition Chris provides some contrasts in style throughout. Very easy to put together and ideal for concert or festival.

Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title.The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.

Hope Arises is one of two new works requested in 2021 of composer James Barnes by Colonel Donald Schofield, to be written for the United States Air Force Band. It is a short piece intended to be used as an opener for AFB's tour concerts. It opens with a dramatic brass fanfare, based on consecutive perfect fourths first introduced by horns and euphoniums, followed by a short oboe solo. An ascending line in mallets and woodwind provide a rather celestial transition, taking the listener to a lively, melodic allegro, which is based on the same opening fourths. This allegro theme is developed until a return to the opening fanfare is powerfully re-announced in brass. The work concludes quite dramatically, and includes a return of the ascending line in woodwinds, mallets, harp and piano. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band

In one form or another Hurricane Katrina affected all our lives. In the fall of 2005 the Mississippi Bandmasters Association commissioned Richard Saucedo to write this work for wind band. In the words of the composer this is“a tribute to those who lost their lives to those who saved lives and to those who continue to persevere in the aftermath...” A wealth of musical effects-from the timpani “heartbeat” to the fury of thestorm to the sense of determined optimism-all contribute to make this an unforgettable concert experience. This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd Carnarnvonshire North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for concert band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.
