Aanvankelijk was Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) een Russische marineofficier, maar de successen die hij als componist behaalde, waren voor hem aanleiding om zich geheel te wijden aan het componeren. Hij is met name bekend vanwegeorkestwerken als Capriccio Espagnol en Sheherazade. Zijn vijftien opera’s worden minder vaak uitgevoerd. ‘Song of India’ komt uit de sprookjesachtige opera Sadko. In het lied zingt een koopman over zijn vaderland.Het is alom bekend geworden, getuige de vele uitvoeringen en bewerkingen. Deze versie voor harmonieorkest is van de hand van Wil van der Beek.

Song of India, oder auch Song of the Indian Guest ist im Deutschen bekannt als das Hindu-Lied aus Rimski-Korskakows Oper Sadko von 1897. Das Hindu-Lied ist eines der berühmtesten Stücke von Rimski-Korsakow, die, wie der Hummelflug aus dem Märchen vom Zaren Saltan, auch außerhalb ihres Opernkontexts berühmt wurden. Dank Wil van der Beeks Bearbeitung ist die beliebte Arie nun auch Blasorchestern zugänglich.

While teaching in India, composer Lindsay Boyd became acquainted with the fundamentals of Northern Hindustani music. The result is this intriguingly unique work for wind band that incorporates distinctive sounds of India. The “drone” sound of the tambura is available as a free download online, or may be substituted with a marimba. The vocal chanting in the piece is a representation of the syllables used by a tabla player when learning to play this exotic drum. Home on the Range is gebaseerd op een gedicht (‘My Western Home’ uit 1872) van Brewster Higley, een arts uit Indiana die een jaar daarvoor een stukje land had gekocht in Kansas. Vervolgens schreef Dean Kelley er een melodie bij -het nieuwe lied werd al snel geliefd onder migranten in de Verenigde Staten. In de loop der jaren werd het steeds bekender, het is uitgevoerd door vele artiesten, onder wie Frank Sinatra. In 1947 werd Home on the Range hetofficiële lied van de staat Kansas. Brewster Higleys omschrijving van een helderblauwe hemel, oneindige vergezichten en een overvloedige fauna vindt met deze muziek nog altijd weerklank bij luisteraars.

Everything started when two Frenchmen, Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, after having sold over ten records with their band, the Ritchie Family, decided to try out something new. The basic idea was to form a new group inspired by the American male myths of the seventies: cowboys, Indians, men in leather clothes, soldiers and policemen. This is how the Village People were born.Their secret was their energy, cheerfulness and tongue in cheek humour combined with strong disco beat and an arresting visual presence. The Wildcat Creek in central Indiana forms a valley connecting all schools in the Howard County area for whom this piece was written. Opening with the percussion section in a stately style, the main theme is first heard in a chorale-like setting. Designed as an extended fanfare, the piece quickly builds in intensity with each subsequent phrase, and culminates in a fast-paced and brilliant sounding ending flourish. Singapura Suite was commissioned by Singapore's Ministry of Education Extracurricular Activities Branch to serve as a compulsory piece for the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival.Singapura is the original name of Singapore in Malay, the native language there. Because Singapore is one of the most important harbors in the world, this two-piece work opens with a seaman's dance. An authentic melody, Chan Mali Chan, is woven into the middle of this first part, whose ABA form becomes clear through the recapitulation of the seaman's dance in a somewhat altered form.Singapore is also a dynamic city-state alive with excitement, thus the second part begins with a fitting dance, a fastbourrée. As contrast there is a second authentic melody, Dayung Sampan, a more easygoing sailing song. This short but curious suite ends in high spirits with a recapitulation of the beginning.

‘Singapura’ is de oorspronkelijke naam van Singapore in het Maleis, de originele taal van deze stadstaat. Omdat Singapore een van de belangrijkste havens ter wereld is, opent de componist met een ‘zeemansdans’. Ook de authentiekemelodie Chan Mali Chan is te herkennen.
