The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one,and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion,” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together.” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals.” His vision is rejected,and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury,” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep,” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In thesecond movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world.” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast,which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned.  To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

The title of the suite Early Hungarian Dances from Gömör suggests the arrangement and harmonization of dance tunes, but this three-movement cycle is far more than that: in fact, the old court dances that provide the thematic material have been freely thought through and brought to completion. The composer has breathed new life into the 18th-century melodies, as Zoltán Kodály did with the Galanta and Marosszék dances, Antonin Dvo ák with Slav dances, and Johannes Brahms with those of Hungary. The chief virtues of the work are its colourful, varied instrumentation, the tasteful combination of its archaic style with the musical language of our day, and not least the fact thatits every bar is enjoyable to play and easy to listen to.

Der Titel der Suite Alte ungarische Tänze aus Gömör lässt die Bearbeitung und Harmonisierung von Tanzmelodien erahnen, doch der dreisätzige Zyklus ist viel mehr als das: Es ist die freie Weiterentwicklung und Vollentfaltung alter höfischer Tanzmelodien, die den Themenstoff geben. Der Komponist erweckt die Melodien aus dem 18. Ne perds pas de temps, pars immediatement. >>. Touche par cette voix inspirante, Innove se mit en chemin vers le chateau de Jesse, situe a l'extremite nord du lac dans un decor de falaises impressionnant. Un vent tourbillonnant, une pluietorrentielle et des eclairs aveuglants s'abattaient sur lui, quand soudain, la meme voix se fit encore entendre. C'etait la voix de Kai, l'esprit du lac. Presque aussitot, le vent cessa de souffler et la pluie s'arreta de tomber. Le sinistre chateau de Jesse se detachait des rochers.Chaque jour, la princesse captive chantait sa tristesse. Plusieurs fois, elle avait tente de fuir, mais en vain, elle fut aussitot reprise. Innove penetra dans le chateau en compagnie de Kai. Commencait alors un terrible combat contre Jesse et ses serviteurs. Desemparee, Eugemaille regardait Innove se battre desesperement. Kai ordonna a la tempete de se lever. Un vent tourbillonnant, une pluie torrentielle et des eclairs aveuglants se dechainerent sur le chateau. Jesse et ses serviteurs furent engloutis par la tempete furieuse. Ils disparurent a jamais. La princesse tomba eperdument amoureuse de celui qui avait si vaillamment combattu Jesse pour la delivrer. Kai s'eprit aussi d'Innove, mais l'esprit du lac doit veiller sur le lac et proteger le bonheur des gens. Kai ne peut aimer Innove. Alors qu'il longeait le lac, il entendit une mysterieuse voix feminine : << La princesse Eugemaille est emprisonnee dans le chateau d'un scelerat du nom de Jesse. Elle a besoin de ton aide. Ne perds pas de temps, pars immediatement. >>. Touche par cette voix inspirante, Innove se mit en chemin vers le chateau de Jesse, situe a l'extremite nord du lac dans un decor de falaises impressionnant. Un vent tourbillonnant, une pluietorrentielle et des eclairs aveuglants s'abattaient sur lui, quand soudain, la meme voix se fit encore entendre. C'etait la voix de Kai, l'esprit du lac. Presque aussitot, le vent cessa de souffler et la pluie s'arreta de tomber. Le sinistre chateau de Jesse se detachait des rochers.Chaque jour, la princesse captive chantait sa tristesse. Plusieurs fois, elle avait tente de fuir, mais en vain, elle fut aussitot reprise. Innove penetra dans le chateau en compagnie de Kai. Commencait alors un terrible combat contre Jesse et ses serviteurs. Desemparee, Eugemaille regardait Innove se battre desesperement. Kai ordonna a la tempete de se lever. Un vent tourbillonnant, une pluie torrentielle et des eclairs aveuglants se dechainerent sur le chateau. Jesse et ses serviteurs furent engloutis par la tempete furieuse. Ils disparurent a jamais. La tempete se calma. Extenue par la lutte, Innove se coucha. Eugemaille et Kai etaient a ses cotes. La princesse tomba eperdument amoureuse de celui qui avait si vaillamment combattu Jesse pour la delivrer. Kai s'eprit aussi d'Innove, mais l'esprit du lac doit veiller sur le lac et proteger le bonheur des gens. Kai ne peut aimer Innove. Inconsolable, elle retourna au lac.Au lever du jour, Eugemaille et Innove se reveillerent. Le lac scintillait de mille eclats de lumiere dans le soleil du matin. La voix de Kai.

Colorado Springs was commissioned by the United States Air Force Academy Band, Lieutenant Steve Grimo, Commmander/Conductor. Colorado Springs, home of the USAF Academy, is set in spectacular landscape towards the southern end of the Rocky Mountains and is a popular tourist resort for skiing and hiking. The Academy plays an important part in the life of the area and serves as a base for the USAFA Band, one of the professional bands forming part of the musical life of the U.S. Air Force. The suite is in three movements: 1. The Springs (fanfare) - “The Springs” is the local residents' name for the town, and this first movement starts with a stirring fanfare for brass and percussion, opening with bold unison horns. The rest of the brass join in and woodwind add decorative figures. After a short change of style, the opening material reappears to close the movement. 2. Seven Falls - Seven Falls is a spectacular waterfall near to the town which cascades 181 feet in seven distinct steps down a solid cliff of pikes peak granite. In this movement, high woodwinds describe the sparkling water as it descends to a popular lookout post near the bottom of the falls. 3. Pikes Peak - To the north-west of the town and reaching an altitude 14,110 feet, Pikes Peak is the farthest east of the big peaks in the Rocky Mountain chain, which contributed to its early fame among explorers and pioneers, and made it the symbol of the 1859 Gold Rush to Colorado with the slogan, “Pikes Peak or Bust.” It is the second-most visited mountain in the world behind Japan's Mount Fuji. This atmospheric movement describes the majesty of the mountain and is based around the fanfare from the first movement. Opening on a solitary bassoon, it is not long before the main theme appears under bubbling woodwinds. The music reaches a passionate climax at which point the opening fanfare reappears to bring the whole work to a close.
