Hope Arises is one of two new works requested in 2021 of composer James Barnes by Colonel Donald Schofield, to be written for the United States Air Force Band. It is a short piece intended to be used as an opener for AFB's tour concerts. It opens with a dramatic brass fanfare, based on consecutive perfect fourths first introduced by horns and euphoniums, followed by a short oboe solo. An ascending line in mallets and woodwind provide a rather celestial transition, taking the listener to a lively, melodic allegro, which is based on the same opening fourths. This allegro theme is developed until a return to the opening fanfare is powerfully re-announced in brass. (March of the First Special Service Force)-During World War II Winston Churchill initiated the formation of Special Force Commando Units that would prove so effective as to change the course of the war. The First Special Service Force led by their intrepid Colonel Robert T. Frederick was perhaps the most famous of these units. Due to their ferocious nature and blackened faces for night raids the fearful Germans gave them the nickname The Black Devils. In 2015 they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal the highest honor the U.S. government can bestow. Frederick's Black Devils is a stirring concert march that pays tribute to this legendary unit.

Bourgeois.Cette oeuvre se compose d?un thème et de quatre variations ; bien que le thème soit original il contient néanmoins un motif relativement influencé par un passage de 14 mesures du Libera Me du Requiem de Fauré. Cette séquence dont l?harmonisation fascinePhilip Sparke paraît sous une forme altérée dans le thème et chacune des variations. Dans l?oeuvre de Fauré le thème mélodique colore les paroles : Quando cæli movendi sunt et terra (Quand le ciel et la terre seront ébranlés) qui ont d?ailleurs inspiré le titre de la présente composition.Après une exposition initiale du thème la 1re variation fait appel au registre aigu des bois qui énoncent une exaltante mélodie et enluminent l?allusion à Fauré par des arpèges fleuris. La 2e variation met en valeur les saxophones et le registre grave des bois dans une valse modale rythmée tandis que la 3e variation prend la forme d?un ample choral pour les cuivres et la percussion.La 4e variation installe une fugue qui présente tour à tour chaque pupitre de l?orchestre avant le retour du thème d?origine interprété par les cuivres tandis que les bois maintiennent brillement le motif de fugue.
