Par SPARKE PHILIP. To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with ashort Coda. Fanfare for Korea est une oeuvre de commande pour le premier Festival International d’Orchestres à Vent de Corée, qui s’est tenu à Séoul, en juin 2010, dans le cadre des cérémonies commémoratives du 60e anniversaire de la guerre de Corée (juin 1950-juillet 1953). Jacob de Haan a choisi de bâtir son oeuvre autour de l’air d’Arirang, la plus connue et la plus appréciée des mélodies coréennes traditionnelles. Par SPARKE PHILIP. The Hanover Wind Symphony, New Jersey, USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned HANOVER FESTIVAL to celebrate the band’s 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section, characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band, the playfulmusic returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Chaque année, la ville de Yokohama célèbre une fête particulière, le “Yokohama Kaikosai”, la date anniversaire de l’ouverture du port maritime qui permit le développement de la ville. L’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Yokohama (Yokohama Wind Symphony) fut spécialement créé en 2006, pour participer au Concert de Bienfaisance « Autour du Brass Band » organisé par l’Association The Brass Cruise. L’objectif de cette formation ad hoc est d’encourager et de soutenir l’activité culturelle de la population et de promouvoir la musique japonaise pour formations à vent ayant ses racines à Yokohama. Le Yokohama Wind Symphony est devenu un élément essentiel du festival. Il est constitué de plus de200 musiciens tous recrutés publiquement. En 2007, le compositeur Satoshi Yagisawa répondit favorablement à l’invitation de l’orchestre dont il fut le chef invité. À cet effet, le comité de l’Association The Brass Cruise lui commanda une oeuvre de circonstance. Satoshi Yagisawa composa une fanfare brillante qu’il intitula Fanfare Mi-Chi-Bi-Ki (d’après le nom d’une statue en bronze de Yokohama). L’oeuvre fut donnée en création mondiale en ouverture du concert 2007. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante.
