A Certain Slant of Light is inspired by the introspective mood created by the rays of light on a dark cloudy day. A colorful, murmuring introduction is followed by a rich main theme in a minor key. It is a well-scored and fresh-sounding piece that will help young bands enhance their musicality.Rays of light against the dark of a cloudy day, or these same rays of light as they penetrate a dark room in late afternoon can create a mood of introspection and make us pause to reflect on the nature of life, loss and hope. A Certain Slant of Light is inspired by the title, but does not depict the actual poem There is a Certain Slant of Light by Emily Dickinson.A Certain Slant of Light opens with a colorful murmuring introduction followed immediately by a statement of the main theme of the piece. The opening briefly returns, followed by a setting of the melody in flute with woodwind accompaniment. The opening then returns and grows to a climax built on variations of the main theme. The piece fades to silence with a soft echo of the opening murmuring material.I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles and that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts.Peter Terry, 2018.

The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.

Hayato Hirose composed this dramatic piece based on the great journey of Marco Polo, Italian traveller and one of the first Europeans ever to visit Asia. In the 13th century, he made a long journey from Venice to Mongolia with his father. After his arrival, he was sent to the various regions in Asia by the Mongolian government to take notes about the culture, the people, and the way of life in those areas. Celebrate the life of this great explorer with this dynamic new concert work. This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer’s children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion “I Shall Love But Theeâ€. The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the bandrepertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist! I Shall Love But Thee. I Shall Love But Thee.

This setting of the hauntingly beautiful Appalachian folk song/carol was originally written for choir by Ruth Elaine Schram and published by Carl Fischer in 2007 (CM9001). It has now been scored for concert band and can be perfomed by band alone or with the Schram choral setting, giving you some great performance options. I Wonder As I Wander is a musically satisfying representation of this lovely Christmas carol.

I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people’s faces.I Love the 207 is in februari 2010 gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Osumi Symphonic Band uit Kyoto, Japan.

Berlioz based his sparkling overture Le Carnaval Romain on themesfrom his opera Benvenuto Cellini. The opera had been performed a fewtimes in Paris, a number of years before, with little success. The overturehowever, quickly became very popular and is still today a great a crowdpleaser. The energetic vitality of the work - with an Italian touch- is certainly present in this skilfully written transcription by TohruTakahashi.
