Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed at the last minute to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month.This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band.Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies willmake a fitting end to any concert with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

The four tunes used in this suite have been made universally popular in Sir Henry Wood?s Fantasia on British Sea Songs which is an ever-present ingredient in The Last Night of the Proms.He introduced this colourful suite into the Proms in 1905 to celebrate the centenary of Nelson?s brilliant victory at Trafalgar when ?Britannia? really did ?rule the waves?. Avec Pomp and Circumstance un cycle de cinq marches militaires Edward Elgar a donné à la marche une véritable dimension symphonique. La Marche n° 1 est incontestablement la plus célèbre des cinq. De la mélodie du trio Elgar devait déclarer qu?elle était de celles dont on n?a l?inspiration « qu?une fois dans sa vie ». Il réutilisera cette mélodie dans son oeuvre chorale Coronation Ode (1902) pour accompagner le texte Land of Hope and Glory d?A.C. Benson. Depuis Land of Hope and Glory est devenu une sorte de second hymne national anglais et fait partie intégrante de la célébrissime Dernière Nuit des Concerts-promenades (the Last Night of the Proms).

A Chanukah Suite for Concert Band-This major work for wind orchestra incorporates the melodies of nine of the most popular and best-known Chanukah-related songs and hymns. Seven are secular and two are liturgical and are creatively developed and adapted to takeadvantage of the various timbres and characteristics of the mature ensemble. The number nine here was intended by the composer to represent the nine candles or lights in the Chanukah m'nora (candelabrum) on the last nightof the festival.

The Camelot Chronicles (?Chroniques de Camelot?) est une œuvre de commande pour l?Orchestre d?Harmonie du Collège Canarelli [Canarelli Middle School] de Clark County (Nevada États-Unis). L?œuvre fut donnée en première par la formation dédicataire (Rick McEnaney dir.) le 13 mars 2007. Le choix de la composition s?est porté sur la ville légendaire de Camelot. Philip Sparke a composé une série de tableaux contrastants et contrastés qui illustrent quelques célèbres personnages de la légende arthurienne. Personne ne sait avec certitude où se situait Camelot. On l'identifie souvent à Tintagel et Glastonbury deux villes situées dans l?ouest de l?Angleterre.Quoiqu?il en soit son histoire est entrée dans la légende et de nombreux poèmes et romans lui ont été consacrés chacun contribuant à obscurcir la vérité et nourrir le mystère.1. At the Castle Gates (?Aux portes du Château?) est un portrait de Camelot.2. King Arthur (Le roi Arthur) illustre l?arrivée majestueuse du roi au château de Camelot.3. Merlin the Wizard (Merlin l?Enchanteur) met en scène un des mauvais tours du magicien. L?atmosphère est sinistre.4. Lancelot and Guinevere (Lancelot et Guenièvre) : la musique chante l?amour courtois qui s?est tissé entre le chevalier et la reine à travers un duo romantique.5. Knights of the Round Table (Les Chevaliers de la Table Ronde) : les Chevaliers partent au galop pour livrer bataille. Le finale est triomphal.

Ce choral splendide illustre le solstice d?hiver la nuit la plus longue de l?année. Il décrit la fin du cycle naturel et a un caractère plutôt mélancolique jusqu?à l?accord final qui symbolise un début nouveau. Ce morceau de contemplation est idéalpour créer un moment de tranquillité lors d?un concert mais aussi comme pièce d?échauffement.
