Dirk Brossé schreef dit werk ter gelegenheid van de zeventigste verjaardag van zijn vader. De compositie is gebaseerd op het thema ‘Happy Birthday’, dat er als een rode draad doorheen loopt. In een aaneenschakeling van korte passageskomt het karakter van ‘Il Signor Brossini’ tot uiting - nu eens hero sch, dan weer impressionistisch en romantisch, soms heftig en vurig maar ook kwetsbaar en ontroerend. Het gevoel voor humor is steeds aanwezig.

Dieses Stück schrieb Dirk Brossé zum 70. Geburtstag seines Vaters, basierend auf dem wohl bekanntesten aller Geburtstagslieder: Happy Birthday. Mit viel Gefühl drückte Brossé in einer Reihe von kurzen Fragmenten die wichtigsten Charakterzüge seines Vaters aus: Heldenmut, aber auch Romantik und Introvertiertheit, Leidenschaft und Feuer, aber auch Zerbrechlichkeit und eine gute Prise Humor. En 2007, Dirk Brossé compose Il Signor Brossini (Monsieur Brossini) l’occasion du 70e anniversaire de son père. Il fait de la mélodie du célébrissime Happy Birthday (Joyeux anniversaire) le fil conducteur de son œuvre. Divers petits fragments successifs brossent le caractère de “Monsieur Brossini” : tantôt héro que, tantôt impressionniste et romantique, parfois passionné et fougueux, mais aussi fragile et émouvant, et toujours avec humour.La mélodie de la chanson Happy Birthday a été composée par deux sœurs américaines, Patty et Mildred J. Hill, en 1893, lorsqu’elles enseignaient Louisville dans le Kentucky. En 1990, cette mélodie fut vendueaux éditions Warner Chappell pour la coquette somme de quinze millions de dollars.D’après le Livre Guinness des Records, Happy Birthday est l’air le plus chanté de tous les temps. Les orchestrations sont multiples et couvrent une pléiade de combinaisons instrumentales. Quant au texte, il a été traduit dans presque toutes les langues. Si le titre Il Signor Brossini fait référence au brillant compositeur italien Gioacchino Rossini, il rappelle également les origines italiennes de la famille Brossé.

Premiering on May 22, 1813, at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice, L'italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was a success, with subsequent performances in Vicenza, Milan, and Naples. It was later performed at His Majesty's Theatre in London in 1819, and again in New York in 1832. Rossini's mixture of opera seria and opera buffa is notable — L'italiana in Algeri tells the tale of Isabella, an Italian girl who uses her wiles to trick unwitting Mustafà, the Bey of Algiers, into freeing her and her lover, Lindoro from his palace. The opera itself fell somewhat out of favor in the 19th century but has been revived frequently since World War II with many successful productions. The sorrowful cavatina Cruda sorte! Amor Tiranno! takes place in Act I, and serves as the introductory aria of Isabella, who finds herself shipwrecked in Algiers. The aria is preceded by the chorus Quanto Roba! Stepstones was commissioned by the Harmonie Victoria Téiteng from Tétange (Luxembourg) for its 125th anniversary. The composer references the music of Rossini, who died 25 years before the commissioning band was founded. The second element this work refers to the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein who was born at the time the band celebrated its 25th anniversary. This spectacular overture has a strong historical and musical story and is ideal to open your concert in style and grandeur!
