All the While was inspired by a very special person in Tyler Arcari's life. Director's will be happy to find many opportunities for emotional and passionate playing with plenty of fun in the middle for young bands. All the While gives students a number of chances to work on expressive playing during the beginning and ending sections, and offers a light rhythmic middle section for contrast.Program Notes:All the While is a bit of a personal piece for me. I was inspired to write it by a very special person in my life. It might be a young-band piece but I feel that it has the capacity for great emotion and passionate playing as well as a little fun in the middle. Sometimes it is difficult to tell people how you feel, even if you have known them for a long time. I think sometimes we say in our heads that “I have felt this way for a long time,†and all the while never being able to put it to words.About the work:The piece opens with a flute and alto saxophone duet. This melody trades off at m. 10 with the addition of new voices and harmonies building in intensity all the way to m. 28. I personally like to use extended phrases in this section, though it looks like it would just utilize four-measure phrases. I feel this adds to the momentum building in dynamic intensity. Measure 28 is a subito change beginning with a prominent Timpani solo. The following section should be played as lightly as possible to avoid a lumbering feel. In mm. 68- 70, the agogic accents should not be very heavy, but more pointed in their momentum to m. 70.Measures 70–76 should be taken with metric liberty bringing out all of the moving parts in the low brass. The low brass really adds the foundation of momentum for the rest of the band here. Measure 76 to the end, though a repetition of material from the beginning, should be played as the high point of the piece and familiar conclusion.

A highly energetic concert opener, High Vibration is a bright and fast fanfare that will leave your audience in awe. This brilliantly scored fanfare will showcase the intensity of the brass section, the sweeping flourishes of the woodwind section, and the metallic nature of keyboard and auxiliary percussion. High Vibration emphasizes consistent transitioning from compound meter to simple meter exposing the ensemble to multiple time signatures and metric modulation.

Homeward is a lyrical ballad in ABA form. The composition presents few rhythmic challenges, allowing the ensemble to concentrate on beauty of sound, balance, dynamic nuance, phrasing, and expressive performance. The woodwind voices present the melody at the opening accompanied by a flute countermelody. Care should be taken to balance the two parts. The four-measure phrases call for tapered dynamics and freedom of the metric pulse at cadence points. A change of tempo and key, with a lean toward the minor mode, mark the contrasting B section (m. 9). Heed the dynamic markings that swell to a climax (m. 16) and then subside within this section. Take liberty to hold back the tempo at the percussion link to the forte restatement of A (m. 27) and the arrival of the fortissimo climax (m. 33). The coda (m. 35) should be presented slowly and serenely as the composition comes to a quiet close.

Written in a driving fast tempo, this exciting work by Michael Oare incorporates the metric grouping of 3+3+2 as a recurring motif. At times superimposing layers of simple meter feel along with more complex patterns, Uproar generates energy and excitement while using a variety of textures and colors within the wind and percussion sections. An impressive-sounding work for young players. Dur: 3:30.

Namase Rhapsody differs in several respects from most other concert works by Jan Van der Roost, with its impressive twists and turns and musical allusions to the work of John Adams. This unique work is a tribute to the legacy of legendary humorist, newspaper columnist, social commentator, and stage and motion picture actor Will Rogers. Although Rogers never met a man he didn't like, his wit earned him a colorful reputation as a political renegade and public favorite. The music contrasts the serious and satirical sides of Rogers and presents your performing ensemble with lyrical, rhythmic, and metrical challenges. This one has great appeal which is sure to make it a favorite of both your performers and audiences!

The Interpretive Wind Band Conductor will help conductors make the creative leap from simply reading notes to insightful musical interpretation. In addition to a long list of topics on conducting and interpretation, it includes in-depth analysis of six masterworks for band, and provides solutions for conducting irregular and non-metrical problems inherent in contemporary music. Thank you for your brilliant interpretive analysis of my 'La Fiesta Mexicana.' It is obvious that you have studied the score very closely and know the music even better than I do! Great advice and insights for the conductor to know for the execution and interpretation of my music. - H. Owen Reed, composer Click here for a YouTube video on The Interpretive Wind Band Conductor.

A delightful three-movement work to show off the bandâ??s skill at playing different styles. The first movement marked Tarantella, includes an asymmetric 9/8 measure and a woodwind fugato. Nocturne features solos for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. Rondo begins with a fierce percussion section soli throughout the movement, and a reflection of developmental material from the Nocturne shows up in this movement as well. A challenging work, but your group will learn several musical concepts. A concert band classic.

Many know Mars, the Bringer of War. Now meet his diabolical son Deimos, the Bringer of Terror. Fashioned in the style of Holst, this work uses driving rhythms, dark harmonies, and an asymmetrical form to personify Deimos, the Greek mythological god of terror and the namesake of Mars' second moon. Enjoy this first offering from Loest's suite The Moons.

This piece pays homage to the tenacity of the human spirit and mankind's achievements of flight and space exploration. With main themes presented in minor keys, the asymmetric and odd meters---especially the 5/4---intend to give thrust and momentum to the music. The many changing meters of the piece are intended to give the listener a similar feeling that a pilot has while attempting to control an aircraft during a turbulent and bumpy flight.
