Here we find the sound of late Renaissance Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria artistically captured for the concert band. The arranger masterfully articulates de Victoria's subtle and expressive polyphony, and clearly balances the intricate counterpoint through skillful scoring techniques. A well-crafted performance of this piece will be a highlight of any concert program. Duration: 2:35.

A powerful statement for concert band! Composed in memory of trumpeter/conductor/educator Dr. Timothy E. Swinehart, this remarkable and uplifting new work by James Curnow will be an excellent finale piece for the musically mature band. As you will see as you begin to prepare it, this is an exceptionally dramatic expression of the musical art which fully utilizes the modern ensemble. Inspired by a poem by the great Walt Whitman, The Mystic Trumpeter is indeed a fitting tribute to the life and work of a fine and influential musician.

Inspired by and based on the masterpiece The Prairie Is My Garden by American painter Harvey Thomas Dunn, this work for the symphonic band is large in scope and musical depth. In the painting, a mother and her two children are out gathering flowers from the quintessential prairie of the Great Plains. Composer Robert W. Smith delivers us to the same Great Plains in this epic musical tone poem. From the reflective opening solo to the bold and courageous statements that follow, this homage to the generations that built the great American west is an excellent concert/festival selection for the mature concert band.

March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

Mystic Forest is a mysterious and exhilarating addition to your next concert. The audience is taken into a fictional world, where visions of blue and purples captivate the landscape. Sweeping harmonies and tender solo lines showcase the energy of the mystic forest, followed by a rapid chase represented by fast tempos and bombastic percussive sections. Engulf your audience with beautiful harmonies that send them into the Mystic Forest.

This hauntingly beautiful folk tune has all of the drama that you’d want out of a lyrical ballad. Jason’s fresh harmonic palette works perfectly with this melody and provides ample opportunities to work on expressiveness and sensitivity while also stretching the dynamic range of your musicians.

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundusâ€, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold, for this is my country to have and to hold. This is My Country is an American patriotic folk song composed in 1940. The words and lyrics are by Don Raye and Al Jacobs. This new arrangement by Jerry Brubaker ads a contemporary flair to this wonderful patriotic work opening with a fanfare-like statement leading to the charming familiar melody. A hearty addition to the repertoire that will complete every program. (2:43).

Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day.The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.
