Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but “lyric scenes”. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise.After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

Wakakusa Hill ligt ten oosten van Nara in Japan en dankt zijn naam aan het jonge gras (‘wakakusa’ betekent ‘jong gras’). Aan de voet van de heuvel zijn beroemde tempels en heiligdommen te vinden, waaronder de Todai-tempel en het Kasuga-altaar.De heuvel is jaarlijks het toneel van het ‘Yamayaki’-evenement in de vijftiende nacht van januari. Voor deze gelegenheid maakt men van de heuvel een enorm vuurspektakel, de vlammen van de vele fakkels verlichten dande nachtelijke hemel van Nara.

Kurz, kräftig und wirkungsvoll: Mit diesen drei Begriffen ist fast alles über dieses fantastische Fanfare von Itaru Sakai gesagt. Fanfare of Wakakusa Hill handelt von der alten japanischen Tradition, auf dem Hügel Wakakusa in der Nacht des 15. Januars ein Feuer zu entzünden, das den Himmel über der am Fuße des Hügels gelegenen Stadt Nara erhellt.

Le mont Wakakusa (littéralement ‘herbe nouvelle’), situé l’est de Nara, tient son nom de cette herbe nouvelle qui le recouvre. son pied se dressent plusieurs temples et sanctuaires célèbres, dont le Temple Todaiji et le sanctuaire de Kasuga. Le quinze janvier de chaque année, le mont Wakakusa est le thé tre d’un incroyable spectacle nocturne. La tradition veut que pour célébrer l’événement du Yamayaki (la Fête du feu de l’herbe), le mont soit embrasé pour laisser les flammes illuminer le ciel nocturne au-dessus de Nara.

The magnificent shows at the Moulin Rouge have left their mark on the collective imagination of all who read about them. For decades, a small but spectacular band formed one of the basic ingredients in this internationally famedcabaret theatre. With the first sounds of this composition by Peter Kleine Schaars, the exciting Parisian nightlife immediately comes to mind. The musette takes us to quartier Pigalle, the red-light district of Paris, and when thedoors of the Moulin Rouge open, we hear the recognizable rhythms of a contemporary disco: a combination of the rhythmic cells 8 / 4 and 3 / 14. In addition, the composition has been highlighted with a plentiful and varied use of rhythmic cell 5. Naturally, the themes and accompaniments have been divided equally among all parts.

De schitterende shows in de Parijse Moulin Rouge spreken tot ieders verbeelding. Een klein maar spectaculair orkest vormde tientallen jaren een van de basisingrediënten in dit wereldwijd vermaarde variététheater. Met de eersteklanken van deze compositie van Peter Kleine Schaars wanen we ons meteen in de Franse hoofdstad. De musette brengt ons naar quartier Pigalle, de rosse buurt van Parijs, en als de deuren van de Moulin Rouge zich openen, horen we deherkenbare ritmieken van een hedendaagse disco: een combinatie van de ritmische cellen 8-4 en 3-14. Daarnaast is de compositie geaccentueerd met een veelvuldig en gevarieerd gebruik van ritmische cel 5. Uiteraard zijn de thema’sen begeleidingen evenredig verdeeld over alle stemmen.

Pendant des décennies, un orchestre de taille modeste mais d’une aptitude exceptionnelle formaitl’un des ingrédients de base de ce cabaret de réputation internationale. Dès les premières mesures, cette composition de Peter Kleine Schaars évoque la vie nocturne animée de Paris. Le style musette nous emmène Pigalle, lequartier chaud de la capitale, et lorsque s’ouvrent les portes du Moulin Rouge, nous entendons les rythmes bien reconnaissables d’une discothèque contemporaine : la combinaison des cellules rythmiques 8 / 4 et 3 / 14. Cette œuvrecontient aussi de nombreux exemples variés de la cellule rythmique 5. Naturellement, les divers thèmes et accompagnements sont divisés également entre toutes les parties.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) can claim a distinction shared with a relatively small number of composers in that his music is more performed now than it was during his lifetime. A Moorside Suite, Holst's only work for brass band, is in three movements, Scherzo; Nocturne; March; and was written as the set work for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1928. It has become recognized as one of the truly great original works for brass band. This arrangement of the entire March brings this refreshing music to concert bands of all levels. Studio-Pop consists of five movements. The firstmovement, entitled Marching on a String, is anenergetic rock march in a modern rhythm. Next,the charming Dreaming of Summer has beencomposed in three-four time - which is quiteunusual in modern pop music. The inspiration forthe third movement, Chicken-Charley was a youngman selling chicken legs from a stall. His supple,dancing movements can be recognised in the music.The fourth movement, Candlelight is a modern,attractive ballad. Finally, Discoteca takes us along ona night visit to a Spanish discotheque. The typicallySpanish chords and the stirring, high-spirited rhythmprovide an exuberant closing to Studio-Pop.

Een temperamentvol werk in popstijl dat bestaat uit vijf verschillende delen. Een energieke rockmars in een modern ritme wordt gevolgd door een charmant deel in driekwartsmaat - in de moderne popmuziek is dat vrij uitzonderlijk. Daaropvolgt een stukje soepele dansmuziek. In een moderne, sfeervolle ballad zijn de samenklanken vervolgens spannend, maar ze lossen steeds weer op in een romantische stemming. Ten slotte zorgen typisch Spaanse akkoorden en een opzwependritme voor een uitbundige afsluiting.

Ein temperamentvolles Werk in fünf Sätzen im Pop-Stil. Ein energiereicher Marsch in einem modernen Rhythmus wird gefolgt von einem charmanten Satz im - für Popmusik ungewöhnlichen - Dreivierteltakt. Der dritte Satz wurde inspiriert von einem Hähnchenverkäufer an der Riviera, wohingegen der vierte, eine moderne, romantische Ballade gut als Hintergrund zu einem lauschigen Abendessen dienen könnte. Abgeschlossen wird dieses unterhaltsame Werk von einem nächtlichen Besuch einer spanischen Diskothek. Einfache Musik, in der viel steckt!

Studio-Pop est une pièce en cinq mouvements. 1. Marching on a String (“En marchant sur une corde”), est une marche aux inflexions de rock qui affirme un rythme dynamique et moderne. 2. Dreaming of Summer (“Rêves d’été”) est écrit dans un chiffrage de mesure assez inhabituel dans la musique pop, la mesure 3/4. 3. Chicken Charley, est inspiré d’un souvenir de vacances sur la Côte d’Azur où le compositeur a été impressionné par un jeune Antillais vendeur de grillades de cuisses de poulet. La souplesse de ses mouvements transparaît dans la musique fortement dansante. 4. Candlelight (“ la lueur d’une bougie”) est une ballade gracieuse etmoderne, qui pourrait servir de toile de fond un dîner charmant. Les harmonisations sont passionnantes, mais trouvent toujours leur résolution dans une atmosphère romantique. 5. Discoteca vous plonge dans la vie nocturne d’une discothèque espagnole. Les accords typiquement espagnols et le rythme exaltant créent un finale exubérant.
