In Atlas Rising, composer Carl Strommen derives inspiration from the statue of Titan Atlas lifting the universe on his shoulders. Unlike Sisyphus (of perpetual rolling stone fame) the monumental effort of Atlas was successful. This piece takes this idea and models it into an exceptional piece for contest/festival performance.

Titles are always a problem - so after listening to a few playbacks, this very imposing statue of the Titan Atlas lifting the Universe on his shoulders came to mind - starting slowly with the low brass, “Rising” moves steadily with determination and intensity to a powerful and “muscular” conclusion . Unlike Sisyphus (of perpetual rolling stone fame) the monumental effort of Atlas was successful . As with all performing pieces, attention to dynamics and articulation are critical - In “Atlas Rising” - the conductor has many opportunities to interpretive discretion, particularly in the opening slower sections and after measure 109 on to the conclusion .

Since the lyrics of this Irish traditional are also supplied with the set, a combination of band with solo voice or even choir is a definite possibility. The Arranger: Leafing through a song-book containing traditionals etc., I was immediately struck by this song and its exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric melody. De tekst van deze Ierse traditional wordt meegeleverd en daarmee is een combinatie met zang ook zeer goed mogelijk.
De arrangeur: Bladerend door een liedboek met traditionals, enz., was ik meteen getroffen door dit nummer en zijn uitzonderlijk mooie en sfeervolle melodie. Ik moest gewoon iets mee doen.

As long as we can remember, trumpets and percussion have been the instruments most closely associated with the army and its soldiers. Just think of the medieval herald who publicly proclaimed all the king's important announcements.
This work opens with a festive fanfare which immediately calls for your attention. No tidings of disaster, but a festive parade of soldiers passing by while whistling merrily.
This idea was the composer's starting point when writing this cheerful little piece.

Zolang we ons kunnen herinneren zijn trompetten en slagwerk de instrumenten die het meest nauw verbonden zijn met het leger en soldaten. Denk maar aan de middeleeuwse heraut, die het publiek alle belangrijke mededelingen van de koningafgekondigde.
Dit werk opent met een feestelijke fanfare die onmiddellijk uw aandacht vraagt. Geen nieuws van een ramp, maar een feestelijke optocht van vrolijk fluitende soldaten.
Dit idee was het uitgangspunt vande componist bij het schrijven van dit vrolijke stukje.

Mame became Broadway Grammy winning composer Jerry Herman’s second international success following that of Hello, Dolly!. Naohiro Iwai has chosen the biggest hits from Mame for his medley.

Aus Mame, für das Herman mit einem Grammy für das beste Musical und einem weiteren Grammy als Komponist und Texter ausgezeichnet wurde, sind in diesem flotten Medley vier Titel verarbeitet.

Jerry Herman, est l’auteur de plusieurs grands succès de Broadway, dont Hello, Dolly! (1964) et l’inoubliable Cage aux Folles(1983), entre autres. La comédie musicale Mame (1966) fut son deuxième grand succès, dont le souvenir est indissociablement lié la créatrice du rôle principal, la délicieuse Angela Lansbury. Inspirée par un roman de Patrick Dennis, l’histoire de Mame est celle d’un petit garçon qui, la mort de ses parents la fin des années 1920, est recueilli par sa tante Mame, une femme un peu excentrique mais terriblement attachante, qui mène une vie de fêtes perpétuelles avec la “jet set” new-yorkaise. Difficile de ne se pas se laisser entraînerpar cet excellent arrangement de l’une des œuvres emblématiques de l’ ge d’or de Broadway.
