Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for ‘to excel’ but also celebrates the band’s anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close.

Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ werd geschreven in opdracht van de AD Concert Band uit het Britse Solihull, ter gelegenheid van het veertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest in 2016. De titel, Ad Excel, heeft een dubbele betekenis, die is gebaseerd op de Engelse van het Latijn afgeleide term ‘to excel’ (excelleren, uitblinken) én op het veertigjarig jubileum van de band, aangezien XL in Romeinse cijfers het getal 40 aanduidt. Het werk opent met een opgewekte fanfare waarin frequent van maatsoort wordt gewisseld. Dan volgt een speels hoofdthema, eerst in het hout en dan het volledige orkest. Der Titel, Ad Excel, ist ein Wortspiel: Es ist das lateinische Wort für to excel“ (engl.: hervorragend sein“), bezieht sich aber auch auf das Jubiläum des Orchesters, da XL die römische Ziffer für 40 ist. Das Werk beginnt mit einer strahlenden Fanfare mit zahlreichen Taktwechseln. Sie führt zu einem verspielten Hauptthema, das zunächst von den Holzbläsern und anschließend vom gesamten Orchester gespielt wird. Eine Überleitung führt zu einem zweiten Thema im Legato. Die Überleitung kehrtschließlich wieder, um die beiden Hauptmelodien in neuen Tonarten und Instrumentierungen vorzustellen, bis das Werk in einer Coda, die von der Eröffnungsfanfare abgeleitet ist, endet.

Un passaggio che funge da ponte porta poi a un secondo tema in legato, suonato per due volte. Il passaggio ritorna poi ad introdurre le due melodieprincipali in una nuova tonalit prima della coda, che riprende la fanfara di apertura, portando il brano alla conclusione.

In a letter addressed to My dear Liszt, dated May 1852, Richard Wagner writes: It was you who awakened the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life. He was referring to a performance of his opera Lohengrin which Franz Liszt conducted at the Weirner Court Theatre on August 28, 1850. The letter was sent from Zurich, since Wagner was exiled from Germany at this time. He had completed his romantic opera, Lohengrin, some five years earlier but doubted whether he would ever hear it performed. The action takes place in Antwerp in the first half of the 10th century. Elsa and Lohengrin are to be married and the 3rd Act opens as they proceed in great splendour, accompanied by their respective noblewomen and noblemen, to the cathedral. As a Prelude to the curtain rising Wagner unleashed music of enormous excitement and expectation - marked very animated - with brass blazing a powerful call against a tingling triplet figure in support. In the opera this magnificent Prelude leads directly into the Bridal Scene as Elsa and Lohengrin make their way solemnly to the betrothal ceremony. Wagner achieves this change of mood and atmosphere most skillfully. In arranging the Prelude for concert performance the challenge was to provide an ending which provides a satisfactory climax to Wagner's blaze of instrumental colour, without proceeding to the solemn betrothal music. This was resolved by using the composer's own mighty flourish to end Act I of his opera. Now, the gauntlet is thrown down to all who perform it to - in Wagner's own words - awaken the mute lines of this score to bright surrounding life..

‘Jubilant Prelude’ is an orchestration of the ‘Preludium over Psalm 150’ originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the ‘Grote or Sint Michaëlskerk’ in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several ‘contemporary’ compositions for organ.‘Jubilant Prelude’ has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm.After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself isheard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement.The instrumentation for concert band was made by Wim Rouw. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section.

On pense également que Saint François d’Assise s’en serait servi pour sa crèche vivante. D’autres attribuent son origine Saint Bonaventure. Quoiqu’il en soit, il est communément reconnu que les strophes ont été écrites ou découvertes par l’Anglais John Francis Wade. Adeste Fidelis (Ô peuple fidèle) est un des plus célèbres cantiques de Noël.
