A unique composition that is descriptive of the work of a Gandy Dancer (a person who maintains or lays railroad tracks), it even comes complete with a train wreck... The music itself is like a work song with a slight rag-time feel. Great low brass parts! Lots of fun and a real audience pleaser! Really Cool!

Greek Folk Dances captures the excitement of two dance styles the composer encountered while on holiday in the Greek Islands - the Hasapiko and the Syrto. The first is slow and dramatic dance that plods along showcasing the solo clarinet, while the second is a blazing fast fire dance that alternates between 4/4, 3/4 and 7/8.The inspiration for these dances came from my first proper cruise in 2007, when we traveled around Greek islands and spent a week on the island of Corfu. Traditional music was all around us and we had the chance to watch and take part in some dancing. I began to formulate mu own ideas into two of the dance styles I had encountered - the Hasapiko and the Syrto. The Hasapiko is a butcher dance where the dancers put their arms around each other's shoulders and move in a slow side to side motion, dragging the insides of their feet on the ground. The music often speeds up, but not necessarily. The Syrto is much faster, again with arms around shoulders. Often a solo dancer breaks away, doing acrobatic dance tricks in the middle of the circle. I observed solo fire dancing among flames sprayed onto the ground using some flammable liquid. I have tried to capture some of the excitement of this. The Syrto can be in 3/4 time or 7/8 time, or a mixture of the two. I have used all three options in a gradual speeding up process charging towards a hugely energetic ending.

Nordanvind is a tour de force symphonic rhapsody that is built on three Scandinavian folk songs. Composer Carl Strommen has composed these Viking-influenced melodies into a concert setting that brings out all of the history of the Scandinavian people. The piece is at times bold and aggressive, at other times beautiful. Carl employs all of the instrumental colors of the concert band to create a new work for more advanced ensembles.Modern Scandinavians are descendants of the Vikings, an adventuresome people who were known for their love of the sea, their naval prowess, and as fierce fighters . The Scandinavian Vikings were warriors from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden who traded, raided and settled in various parts of Europe, Russia, the North Atlantic islands, and the northeastern coast of North America .Starting around 1850, over one million Swedes left their homeland for the United States in search of religious freedom and open farm land . Augustana College was founded in 1860 by graduates of Swedish universities and is located on the Mississippi River in Rock Island, Illinois . Home of the “Vikings,†Augustana College is the oldest Swedish- American institution of higher learning in the United States . This powerful and lively piece takes inspiration from Swedish history and from Swedish folk songs and hymns .Havsdrake (Dragon of the Sea)The Nordanvind or “North Wind†blows a cold wind during a journey of a group of courageous Viking rowers . The “Dragon-ship†or long ships designed for raiding and war was a sophisticated, fast ship able to navigate in very shallow water . To musically portray these magnificent seafaring vessels, the director is encouraged to use an Ocean Drum (or a rain stick) during the introduction . Wind players may consider blowing air through their instruments to suggest the North wind . Adding men’s voices to accompany the haunting low brass and percussive “rower†sounds can be helpful in creating the dark and ominous portrayal of Viking adventurers .Slangpolska efter Byss - KalleIn Sweden, a “polska†is a partner dance where the dancers spin each other (släng in Swedish “to sling or tossâ€) . Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is attributed to Byss-Kalle, who was a notable Swedish folk musician, specifically a nyckelharpa player . Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is a traditional “polska†dance song most often played on the Nyckelharpa or keyed fiddle and is commonly heard in pubs and at festive events throughout Sweden . Approximately 10,000 nyckelharpa players live in Sweden today, and the Swedish and the American Nyckelharpa Associations are dedicated to this Swedish National instrument . The director is encouraged to share video and audio examples of the nyckelharpa playing the original Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara (Children of the Heavenly Father)Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara Is a traditional Swedish melody, possibly of German roots, and was believed to be arranged as a hymn by the Swedish hymn writer, Karolina Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg (1832–1903) . As a daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister, she began writing poems as a teenager and is said to have written over 1,700 different texts . There are two different accounts as to the inspiration for this hymn . The first story is that Lina (as she was called) wrote the hymn to honor her father and to say thank you to him for raising her and protecting her . A second belief is of her witnessing the tragic death of her father . She and her father were on a boat, when a wave threw her father overboard . It was said that the profound effect of watching her father drown is what caused Lina to write the text to this hymn . Although this is a treasured song to people of Swedish descent everywhere, it speaks to all people about a father tending and nourishing his children, and protecting them from evil .SPS71FThe Augustana College Concert BandFounded in 1874, the Augustana Band program is one of the oldest continuously active collegiate band programs in the country . Students in the ensemble play a large part in choosing their music for performance, which include works from the standard repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, and the latest compositions from leading composers .Rick Jaeschke began his musical career as a clarinet player in the 1st US Army Band . He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Susquehanna University, a Masters of Music from James Madison University, and a doctorate from Columbia University in New York . He was also fortunate to study conducting with Donald Hunsburger and with Frederick Fennell .Dr . American Dances is a three movement suite originally composed for the Boston Pops Brass. Each movement features an American popular music genre. Rag draws upon the ragtime style most often associated with Scott Joplin and the city of New Orleans. This infectious rag will delightfully challenge your wind sections. When programmed with Square (Mvt. 2) and Swing (Mvt. 3), the full American Dances suite is particularly effective in any concert setting.

Solo Trombone, Band parts - picc, 2fls, 2 obs, EH, 2bsns, 3 cls, bcl, 2asx, tsx, bsx, 4 hns, 3 tpts, 3 tbns, euph, tba, timp, 3 perc Duration: 17' Composed: 2013 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC …the audience loved Red Dragonfly. Definitely a keeper in my repertoire! Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. Difficulty Level: Trombone 6 (Professional) Band 5 (Advanced) See also Red Dragonfly, Sonata for Trombone and Piano for the version with piano accompaniment. See composer website for audio sample. When Hearts Tremble is an emotion packed piece dedicated to musician friends lost all to soon. This beautiful composition by Brant Karrick reflects on the fragility of human existence, joyous memories of loved ones and their effect on everyone around them, and maintaining hope for what the future will hold when all feels lost. This tour de force piece perfectly displays Karrick's polished compositional craft with impeccable scoring, beautiful melodic writing, and exceptional orchestrational color. While the day-to-day grind of our lives can be filled with overwhelming obligations, goals and commitments, it is sometimes very easy to forget just how precious and fragile life is . It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .

Leo Janácek (1854-1928) wrote a large portion of his most distinctive music late in life, following the success of a revised version of his opera Jenufa in 1916. His extensive research of the national folklore had a great impact on his work as a composer. Inspired by a military band performance in a park, the Sinfonietta opens with a military-style fanfare for brass and percussion. It received its commission from a Czech gymnastics association to celebrate the Eighth National Sokol Rally which took place in Prague in the summer of 1926. The Czech Philharmonic gave the first performance on June 26th of that year under the direction of Vaclav Talich. The inner movements provide contrasting melodic and rhythmic material, characterized by rhythmic shifts, abrupt mood changes, and fragments of folk dance. The final movement climbs through a long, intensifying sequence to reprise the opening music, now taken up by the full orchestra. This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan , a friend of its composer, and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland). The work was based on traditional Celtic music, and consists of three movements. 1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza. 2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes. 3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence. The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players. The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece. Band grade 4, soloist grade 5. 2. Written as a companion piece with Border Dance (JB117), Stranger At My Door is written in memory of Peg Bowden, a resident of southern Arizona, who was active in groups assisting migrants by providing food, shelter, clothing and medical assistance. Peg's book Stranger At My Door chronicles her involvements with a migrant who appeared at her doorstep one Christmas Eve in desperate need. Composer Jack Stamp opens this tone poem with a rendition of O Little Town Of Bethlehem accompanied out of time by a haunting melody in the low winds. An original melody, Peg's Theme and the hymn tune Bera (The Hymn of the Good Samaritan from 1849) are first presented plainly, then interwoven in a rhythmic fantasia of fugato fragments. Peg's Theme returns in its fully-harmonized form and the work ends in peaceful introspection. Solos for Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Bass Clarinet, as well as solis for trumpets and trombones are featured. Although Stranger At My Door incorporates a well known Christmas carol, it is appropriate for all seasons due to its timeless message of selflessness in the face of danger.

Roger Zare is living every young composer's dream. At a tender age, he has already been lauded by the best, and his compositions continue to earn awards. Green Flash, his first publication with Theodore Presser Company, was written in 2007 for the USC Thornton Symphony, received a BMI Student Composer award in 2007, was chosen to be read at the 2008 American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Readings, won the ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Prize in 2009, and has now won the 2012 Symphony in C Young Composers' Competition. For more about Green Flash and a YouTube video of the premiere performance, see the composer's website (www.rogerzare.com/greenflash.htm).A “green flash†is a rare atmospheric phenomenon that occurs as a sunset reaches its end. If conditions are just right, then a spark of green will hover on the horizon for a fleeting moment as the sun disappears. I first witnessed this subtle effect in Florida in 2005. Seeing the mythical event for the first time inspiredthis composition. Green Flash is a musical journey from daybreak to sunset. It focuses on the manipulation of colors and textures throughout its five sections. The musical events are designed to paint a picture of various scenes during the day. The piece begins with the heartbeat of the world emerging from the silentdarkness of the night. As night transitions to dawn, waves of color propagate from the repeating low C, building up through the harmonic series to become the vibrant colors of sunrise. Eventually all twelve notes of the chromatic scale are sounding together. Abruptly, a morning fog engulfs the scene. Out of the mist rises the only melodic theme in the work, played by a solo English horn, and later taken up by other solo winds. Once the fog dissipates, the sky fills with the playful dance of wispy cirrus clouds. A rainbow-like halo surrounds the sun, adding a burst of color to the scene. This carefree, optimistic cloud dance is invaded by a menacing front of cumulonimbus clouds. A storm rages at a frantic pace, but in its dying breath yields the most glorious of sunsets. Only as the last glint of sunlight disappears below the horizon, a faint sparkle of green lingers in the atmosphere.

This is one of a series of pieces by Stuart Johnson in the hugely popular Bandstand series. As always, it is tuneful, rhythmic, and based on a song or dance style. The others in the series are Boogie, Blues, and Ragtime, and all of them offer the unmistakable Johnson touch.
