A delightful combination of lyrical themes with rhythmic exuberance and folk-like melodies. Viva Espania is based on themes by two 19th-century Spanish composers. The opening theme is from Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega. That piece is a traditional Spanish waltz and was inspired by the famous Alhambra Castle in Grenada. The second theme is by Isaac Albeniz from a suite of music for the piano, Songs of Spain, entitled Leyenda. This section, while still in 3/4 has a fiery exuberance much like one would expect from a flamenco guitarist, yet it's very playable by young players. Authentic Spanish music that's a terrific addition to any concert performance!

Francisco de Madina (1907-1972), also known as Aita Madina, received his education in Bordeaux and was ordained a priest in 1929. He served his first parish in Buenos Aires and became director of a school in Cuidad de Salta. During this time, he began to develop as a composer and started to premiere his work in Buenos Aires. His primary influences included Debussy, Ravel and Prokofiev. In 1955, he moved to New York, where he founded a residence for the Lateran Canons Regular. His music began to enjoy performances in America and Spain. The Basque Children Overture, a perfect header for a family-themed concert, amuses with playful snippets of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, march-like rhythms, and a whirling finish. Costa Del Sol (Coast of the Sun) creates a musical panorama of the beautiful Mediterranean coastline of the Málaga province in southern Spain. Based upon series of chord progressions common to generations of Spanish flamenco guitarist, David Shaffer has crafted a spirited and beautiful setting of three authentic Spanish folk dance forms, the Corrida, Jota and the Fandango. This energetic and captivating composition opens with a fiery statement reminiscent of the traditional Spanish bullfights. A quick folk dance in ¾ (Jota) follows, utilizing traditional Spanish percussion. The middle section is introduced with a lush alto saxophone solo leading into a lyrical folk dance (Fandango). The fiery Jota returns in two separate but distinct forms to conclude the piece. The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a ‘period piece’.

Simple Sarabande ist im Stil der ursprünglichen Sarabande, einem würdevollen höfischen Tanz aus dem 17. Jahrhundert im 3/4-Takt, geschrieben, wenn auch Philip Sparke für seine Komposition einen etwas moderneren harmonischen Ausdruck wählte. Einfachheit und leichte fließende Bewegungen sind die Schlüsselworte in diesem Stück, in dem Ihr Blasorchester sich ganz auf die Schönheit von Ton und Phrasierung konzentrieren kann.

La sarabande est une danse au caractère digne, sur un rythme ternaire lent, dont l’origine remonte la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Très appréciée en France et en Espagne, elle conquiert rapidement l’ensemble des cours européennes. La sarabande s’intègre alors dans la musique instrumentale et devient un mouvement fondamental de la suite de danses. On retrouve quelques éléments stylistiques de cette danse dans Simple Sarabande. La structure harmonique reste néanmoins plus moderne.

This blazing fast work suggests spectacular fireworks and other such explosions with off-beat accents in the driving snare drum and timpani. Set in the standard fast-slow-fast sections, an alto saxophone soloist moves into the spotlight during the slower expressive section.

Firepower was the code name for the planning of the 1997 Royal Tournament by Michael Parker (producer). I met Michael Parker in the summer of 1996 and he outlined an idea based on a firework festival he had seen in Valencia Spain. This sparked off some musical ideas and the result is this piece. The off-beat accents in the percussion part suggests explosions, and there are moments which suggest spectacular fireworks. The work is in three sections, two very fast outer parts surrounding a slower, more expressive opportunity for the alto sax soloist.
