When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. Francisco de Madina (1907-1972), also known as Aita Madina, received his education in Bordeaux and was ordained a priest in 1929. He served his first parish in Buenos Aires and became director of a school in Cuidad de Salta. During this time, he began to develop as a composer and started to premiere his work in Buenos Aires. His primary influences included Debussy, Ravel and Prokofiev. In 1955, he moved to New York, where he founded a residence for the Lateran Canons Regular. His music began to enjoy performances in America and Spain. The Basque Christmas Suite, a short work for choir and orchestra, is characterized by short, contrasting sections and a festive, tuneful energy. The Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona (1896-1963) wrote many works labelled as Afro-Cuban, and sorting them all can be difficult. While some are lost and others are scattered about, the 1930 piano suite titled Danzas Afro-Cubanas, a collection of six of the dances, remains a core group in the style. La Comparsa (Carnival Procession) is the sixth dance in the suite, and it is based on the traditional parade and ceremony that occurs during Carnival season in Cuba. This composition starts with the gradual approach of the procession and carries one through all the excitement until the last faint notes of the departing parade die away in the distance. This version for full orchestra has been arranged by Morton Gould (1913-1996). The first performance of the opera Sophie's Choice was given at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London on December 7, 2002, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and directed by Trevor Nunn. The Concert Suite from Sophie's Choice was written for the Peabody Institute. The first performance was given by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra with mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Healy, conducted by Hajime Teri Murai, at the Peabody Institute, Baltimore on April 24, 2004. The suite is a direct transcription by the composer from the orchestral music of the opera. The mezzo-soprano aria may be omitted.

Die Vielseitigkeit des Fagotts erkannten schon viele große Komponisten, wie z.B. Vivaldi oder Rimski-Korsakow. Es kann von melancholisch, klagend bis hin zu komisch und grotesk klingen. Letztere Eigenschaft war der Grund, warum in der commedia dell’arte im Italien der 1550er Jahre eine Figur namens Signor Fagotto, die das Fagott verkörperte, eine der wichtigsten komischen Rollen spielte. Maxime Aulio benannte nach ihm dieses Werk, in dem das Fagott seine schalkhafte, charmante Seite voll ausleben und auch das übrige Blasorchester brillieren kann.

Nicola Rimski-Korsakov disait du basson qu’il était « sénile et fourbe en Majeur, souffrant et triste en mineur ». Dans le grave et en staccato, il est indéniablement comique, grotesque et bouffon. Cette diversité de caractère avait déj inspiré la Commedia dell’arte qui confia Signor Fagotto l’un des rôles comiques essentiels. Au XVIIIe siècle, selon l’usage de l’opéra-comique italien (opera buffa), la voix était doublée par un instrument vent. De Signor Fagotto au basson, l’instrument qui allait le seconder, il n’y avait qu’un pas. C’est aussi cette époque que le basson devient un instrument soliste part entière. Vivaldi lui consacrera près de40 concertos. Sans doute a-t-il été conquis par sa personnalité généreuse, comme bien d’autres compositeurs dont Maxime Aulio. Il Signore Fagotto débute avec une introduction orchestrale brillante. Le soliste expose ensuite le thème premier de l’œuvre. L’utilisation presque constante d’un chiffrage de mesure irrégulier (7/8) permet au basson d’accentuer son caractère espiègle et charmant, tout en laissant l’auditeur un espace de liberté suffisant pour imaginer les facéties du personnage. Il Signore Fagotto est une œuvre captivante pour l’accompagnement orchestral et qui offre au basson une superbe partie soliste.Il Signore Fagotto a été donné en création mondiale le 24 avril 2002 par Laurent Le Chenadec (basson) accompagné de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie du Conservatoire National de Région de Toulouse.

Journey back to ancient Greece and view a place of long-gone legend. Follow the trail to the Kingdom of Ithaca, from the heroic palace, to a place of tranquility, to a reckless dance of abandon, to the return of Odysseus. The melodic material used in 200 B.C. is from a two thousand year old Greek hymn to Apollo. The legendary adventures of Odysseus as described by Homer in the Odyssey (ca. 700 B.C.) provide the programmatic material. The music is freely based upon the First Delphic Hymn (or Paen to Apollo), composed ca. 200 B.C. The source is a transcription appearing on pages 363 - 367 of Ancient and Oriental Music, Edited by Egon Wellesz (Oxford University Press: London, 1957). Each movement of the work depicts a key event in the epic Homeric poem, as described below. Movement I: Intrada - The first four notes of this movement, C - Bb - G - Bb, are the melodic and harmonic foundation for the entire work. These pitches, introduced in a simple and direct manner, are subsequently developed in more complex fashions throughout the suite. Following this stately introduction is a militaristic fanfare that introduces the dotted-eighth and sixteenth-note figure later reprised in the second and fourth movements. Indeed, all the musical ideas which will be central to the remaining movements first appear in the Intrada. This movement depicts the grandeur of Odysseus and his kingdom in Ithaca, and establishes the heroic mood of the entire work. Movement II: Ballad - After a brief restatement of the opening dotted-eighth-and-sixteenth fanfare, the second movement extracts the falling third (Bb to G) from the C - Bb - G - Bb motif and extends it and expands it into a haunting solo for alto saxophone. The C - Bb - G - Bb motif appears again (see measures 23 - 33 in trumpets) as counterpoint to this melody, now pulsing through the thick texture of the band. Many performers have come to view the Ballad as the emotional epicenter of the entire suite; my conception of the Ballad is to achieve a union of pathos and strength. Programmatically, this movement depicts Odysseus's son, Telemachos, as he both longs for Odysseus's return and stoically defends his father's kingdom. Movement III: Dance - It will take Odysseus twenty years to return to Ithaca. During his absence, noblemen besiege his palace, violating the sanctity of the household and seeking the hand of his wife, Penelope. This movement depicts the wanton revelries that result. The original four-note motif is chromatically altered and the meter is made irregular. The rapid tempo, driving percussion, and angular meter and melodies combine in an explosion of reckless abandon. Movement IV: March Building from a delicate woodwind ensemble accompanied by finger cymbals to a fully orchestrated statement replete with thundering percussion, this is a resounding march of victory. Odysseus has returned in triumph to restore dignity to his household and to reclaim the throne of the Kingdom of Ithaca.
