Una Furtiva Lagrima is a brilliant arrangement by Jacob de Haan, of the aria from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) for concert band. The subject of this song is the power of love: Nemorino, the main character of the opera, sings the aria as he notices that his love potion is starting to take effect on his beloved. A furtive tear (Una Furtiva Lagrima) betrays his beloved’s feelings towards him in this emotional piece. Uit de opera L’elisir d’amore van Gaetanos Donizetti bewerkte Jacob de Haan de aria Una furtiva lagrima voor blaasorkest. This delightful new composition takes its inspiration from the classic French swash buckling tale of Cyrano de Bergerac and his fight to win the love of the beautiful maiden Roxane. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane), dramatic episodes, as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour, to sing and to play like virtuosi. This work is sure to become a standard item in the concert band repertoire.In Cyrano verklankt de componist Piet Swerts het romantische en tragische verhaal van de briljante dichter en zwaardkunstenaar Cyrano de Bergerac en zijn mooie, intellectuele nicht Roxane, op wie hij tot over zijn oren verliefdis. This arrangement of a splendid Bach chorus first used in the secular Cantata 207 is perhaps better known in its later version from Cantata 207a, Auf, schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten (“Come, resounding tones of merry trumpets”). Much of the music for this cantata is celebratory and lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboes d'amore and flutes, making it an ideal vehicle for concert band.

The work Prevision has been composed in a free fantasy form. Deep in thought the composer sketches his prevision - the development of his small grandson growing up to be an adult. After a brilliant introduction, a slow march follows, whichsymbolises the first steps toward adulthood. Aspects such as love and a sense of security, that are indispensable for a positive development, are presented in a calm middle section, after which an energetic closing part refers to the rebelliousnessof an adolescent. Nel 1924, John Philip Sousa dedica a questa unit la marcia The Black Horse Troop(La truppa dei cavalli neri). Da The Black Horse Troop traspare molto più del semplice talento nel comporre di Sousa; il suo amore per i cavalli lo ha senza dubbio aiutato a fare di questa marcia una delle sue creazioni più riuscite. Il titolo prende spunto dal fatto che la Troupe A monta solamente cavalli neri.
